Chapter 3 - The Hallway Whispers

Walking into Oak Ridge High School on Monday morning felt like walking into an interrogation room. Emma had begged to stay home, but I told her that hiding would only give the rumors more power. She had pulled her hair into a neat bun, put on her favorite oversized green sweater, and held her head up as we pulled into the student drop-off loop.

""Remember who you are,"" I told her, squeezing her fingers before she got out. ""You didn't do anything wrong.""

She gave me a tight, brave nod and slipped into the stream of students.

Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Oak Ridge High had barely twelve hundred students; news traveled through Snapchat and hallway whispers faster than the school bell. By third period, Emma couldn't walk past a row of lockers without catching someone glancing at her, then immediately ducking their heads together to whisper.

The worst part wasn't the pity from regular classmates—it was the locker room before cheer practice.

Emma walked in at 3:15 PM to change into her practice shorts and t-shirt. The locker room went dead silent the second the metal door slammed shut. Harper was sitting on the wooden bench in the center aisle, surrounded by three junior cheerleaders who always hovered around her. Lauren had bought the squad personalized warm-up jackets earlier that semester, effectively buying Harper a circle of loyal lieutenants.

Chloe, the squad co-captain and Emma's friend since middle school, immediately walked over to Emma’s locker.

""Hey,"" Chloe said quietly, leaning against the grey locker door. ""How are you holding up?""

""I'm fine,"" Emma said, keeping her eyes fixed on tying her sneakers.

Across the room, Harper cleared her throat loudly. She stood up, holding a water bottle with both hands, looking fragile and tearful. ""Emma, can we please talk? I've been feeling sick all weekend about what happened.""

Emma didn't turn around. ""There's nothing to talk about, Harper.""

""Yes, there is!"" Harper’s voice climbed into that wounded, dramatic pitch she used whenever teachers questioned her late assignments. ""Everyone is looking at me like I'm a monster! People are saying David stole my spotlight or that I forced him to walk with me! He was just trying to be a good dad to me because my real dad abandoned me! Why are you letting everyone blame me?""

Emma stopped tying her shoe. She stood up slowly, turning to face her stepsister. For the first time in four years, Emma didn't look like a passive observer in David’s blended family experiment.

""Did I say a word to anyone, Harper?"" Emma asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

""No, but your mom is telling people—""

""My mom hasn't talked to anyone except my dad,"" Emma cut in. ""And for the record, this isn't about you, Harper. You didn't make the promise. He did. He promised me on Thursday night. He told me he'd be there for me. And when he walked out on that field, he looked right at me and chose to ignore me. That’s between him and me.""

""Well, David said you were overreacting!"" Harper shot back, her mask slipping to reveal the petulant entitlement beneath. ""He said you’re just jealous because he treats me like his real daughter now! He bought me a promise ring on Saturday to prove that our family is solid, whether you want to be part of it or not!""

A sharp gasp rippled through the girls sitting on the benches.

Emma went completely rigid. ""He bought you what?""

Harper held up her right hand, where a small, sparkling band sat on her ring finger. ""He said I'm his priority now. Because I actually appreciate what he does for this family.""

Chloe stepped forward, her face twisting in disgust. ""Harper, shut up. That is the grossest thing you've ever said.""

""It’s the truth!"" Harper shouted. ""Emma thinks she’s so special because she’s been on varsity longer, but David loves my mom now. Which means he loves me. You can't force someone to show up for you if they don't want to!""

Before Chloe could lunge forward, Mrs. Collins pushed open the locker room door, blowing her whistle with a piercing blast.

""Ladies! Practice started two minutes ago! What is going on in here?""

Emma didn't say a word. She grabbed her gym bag, zipped it shut with a violent tug, and walked straight past Mrs. Collins toward the exit.

""Emma Miller! Where are you going?"" the coach called out.

""I'm going home,"" Emma said without looking back. ""And I'm off the squad.""
