Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Paper Trail

The morning sunlight streamed through the high windows of the precinct's financial task force bullpen, illuminating towering stacks of audited bank statements. I sat beside Detective Vance, nursing a cardboard cup of black coffee while our forensic accountant clicked rapidly through transaction logs.

"It's worse than we thought last night, Claire," Vance muttered, sliding a thick blue folder across the scarred metal desk. "Your sister didn't just snap photos of your physical cards when you visited her."

I opened the folder, scanning the highlighted lines of digital access logs that mapped out an intricate pattern of systematic theft. "She accessed my cloud backup from an old iPad I left logged in at our parents' house."

"Bingo," Vance confirmed, tapping a highlighted IP address registered to Richard Miller’s home office router. "She extracted your secondary debit pins, your routing numbers, and even attempted to initiate a home equity loan against your condo."

A cold shudder ran down my spine as I realized how calculated the violation had truly been. Nadine had spent months carefully disassembling my entire financial foundation just to fund a single twelve-hour party.

The intercom on Vance's desk buzzed sharply, breaking the heavy concentration in the small office. "Detective Vance, there's a Derek Montgomery in the lobby asking to speak with Investigator Miller."

I exchanged a surprised glance with Vance, who nodded toward the waiting room before pressing the buzzer to unlock the security door. Derek stepped into the precinct, looking disheveled, exhausted, and completely stripped of his usual country-club polish.

"Claire," Derek began awkwardly, nervously holding a heavy leather-bound folder under his arm. "I'm sorry to bother you here, but I needed to show you this before my family's lawyers do something stupid."

"Sit down, Derek," I said, gesturing to the metal chair opposite mine. "What do you have there?"

He placed the folder on the desk and pushed it toward me with trembling hands. "These are the vendor contracts Nadine asked me to sign as secondary guarantor three months ago."

I flipped open the first page and saw Derek's signature forged in sloppy, hurried blue ink on a forty-thousand-dollar catering liability waiver. Attached to the back was an application for a joint high-interest credit card taken out under Derek's private business name.

"She told me her sister was gifting her the budget, but the vendors required a local business guarantor for security deposits," Derek explained, burying his face in his hands. "She forged my signature on six different commercial contracts."

"She wasn't just stealing from me," I realized aloud, looking at the mounting evidence of criminal behavior. "She was running an entire multi-target fraudulent enterprise."

"The wedding is completely off," Derek said quietly, his voice cracked with humiliation and heartbreak. "My father called our attorneys at two in the morning to issue a formal press release canceling the ceremony."

"How is she handling it?" I asked, knowing the Montgomery name was the only social status Nadine truly worshipped.

"She called me from central booking six times screaming that I was abandoning her," Derek replied with a bitter, hollow laugh. "She still thinks she did nothing wrong, Claire. She genuinely believes the world owes her this."
