Chapter 2 - Handcuffs and Imported Silk

The heavy click of polished leather boots on hardwood cut through the hushed murmur of the dining room. Lead Detective Marcus Vance, an old colleague of mine with twenty years on the force, approached our table with a clipboard tucked firmly beneath his arm.
"Claire Miller?" Detective Vance asked formally, acknowledging my badge on the table with a crisp nod. "We received the digital evidentiary package and the sworn affidavit twenty minutes ago."
Nadine stood up so abruptly her heavy velvet chair tipped backward, crashing against the floor with a dull thud. Her pristine ivory designer gown swished around her legs as she threw her hands up defensively.
"Officers, this is a private family dinner!" she yelled, her voice screeching into the rafters. "My sister is playing a sick prank because she’s jealous of my wedding!"
"Ma'am, please keep your hands where we can see them," the second officer stated calmly, unhooking a pair of steel cuffs from his tactical belt. "Are you Nadine Miller?"
"Yes, but you don't understand!" Nadine cried out, pointing an accusing, manicured finger at me. "She's my sister! Family shares money all the time! It's not theft if it's family!"
Several guests at the adjacent tables visibly winced at her logic, whispering furiously behind linen napkins. Derek Montgomery stood up slowly, stepping completely clear of the table and walking over to his parents, who looked thoroughly mortified.
"Derek, baby, help me!" Nadine begged, turning toward her fiancé with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Tell them this is ridiculous! Tell them you know Claire is just bitter!"
Derek looked at her, then glanced down at the glittering diamond ring on her finger that my stolen funds had likely secured. "Did you actually steal over a hundred grand from your sister, Nadine?" he asked, his voice hollow and cold.
"It wasn't stealing!" she protested loudly, tears finally ruining her professional makeup. "It was an advance on what she owed this family for being selfish all these years! Dad promised he would cover it later!"
Richard jumped to his feet, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled purple. "Nadine, shut your mouth right now!" he barked, realizing the catastrophic legal implications of what she had just blurted out.
Detective Vance turned his sharp gaze directly toward my father, pulling a pen from his breast pocket. "Is that an admission of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, sir? Because this entire conversation is being recorded on our body cameras."
My father snapped his jaw shut, his hands trembling so hard he had to lean against the table to steady himself. He looked at me, his eyes pleading not for justice, but for me to lie and make this nightmare disappear.
"Claire, please," Richard pleaded in a desperate, ragged whisper. "If she gets a record, the Montgomerys will cancel the wedding. Our business partnership with Derek's father will be ruined."
"You should have thought about your business partnership before you encouraged your daughter to steal my life savings," I replied, my voice steady and unwavering. "I worked eighty hours a week for five years to save that money for my first home."
The female officer stepped forward, taking Nadine's wrist with practiced, unyielding firmness. "Nadine Miller, you are under arrest for grand larceny, identity theft, and scheme to defraud in the first degree."

The metallic click of the handcuffs locking around Nadine's wrists sounded louder than a gunshot in the cavernous banquet hall. Nadine shrieked, thrashing against the officer's grip as her imported silk sleeves bunched up uncomfortably.
"Claire, you bitch! You ruined my life!" Nadine screamed as she was forcibly guided away from the glittering table toward the exit. "Mom! Dad! Don't let them take me!"
