Chapter 5 - The Legal Fortress

At precisely eight o’clock the following morning, a sleek black sedan pulled into my driveway. Robert Vance stepped out, carrying an embossed leather briefcase. Robert had been Thomas’s closest friend and our trusted corporate attorney for twenty-five years. He had stood beside me at Thomas’s funeral, promising that if I ever needed anything, day or night, he would be there.
Sitting across from me at the kitchen table, Robert adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses and methodically reviewed the documents I had discovered. Page after page, his brow furrowed deeper, a look of profound disgust settling over his weathered features.
“This is monstrous, Margaret,” Robert said, dropping the ledger onto the table with a dull thud. “Conservatorship fraud, elder exploitation, intentional infliction of emotional distress... if Chloe had succeeded in establishing a residency claim here, getting them out would have taken six months of brutal eviction proceedings through the municipal courts. You acted with brilliant instinct by putting their belongings outside before they legally established tenured occupancy.”
“Under Ohio law, did they establish tenancy in three days?” I asked, my voice steady despite the lingering tightness in my chest.
“Not even close,” Robert said firmly. “They were transient guests. No formal lease was signed, no rent was exchanged, and their stay was strictly conditional. By preventing them from re-entering and taking physical possession of the property, you completely cut off their ability to claim tenant rights. But this social media video—this public defamation campaign—that is where we have them dead to rights.”
Robert pulled a fresh legal pad from his briefcase and began writing with a heavy gold fountain pen. “Chloe’s video has over eighty thousand views now. People in your community, your church, perhaps even your former business clients, are seeing it. She is actively soliciting public money under fraudulent pretenses using your likeness and your address. That’s interstate wire fraud and criminal defamation.”
“What do we do?”
“We hit them with an iron wall,” Robert replied, his eyes flashing with fierce loyalty. “First, I am filing an immediate emergency Cease and Desist order and a Notice of Intent to Sue for Defamation against Chloe. Second, we are issuing a formal Trespass Warning with the Columbus Police Department. If either of them steps foot onto your grass, they will be arrested on sight.”
He paused, looking at me with gentle compassion. “Margaret, what do you want to happen to Lucas?”
I looked out the window at the front yard, where the morning sun was illuminating the red maple tree Thomas had planted when Lucas was born. I remembered my husband standing out there with dirt on his hands, smiling proudly as a six-year-old Lucas ran through the sprinkler.
“Lucas needs to feel the full weight of the fire he helped light,” I said quietly. “He allowed this woman to turn him against his own mother. He stood in my kitchen and tried to intimidate me out of my late husband’s room. Protect me, Robert. Protect Thomas’s legacy. Do not pull a single punch.”
Robert nodded grimly. “Consider it done.”

Within three hours, Robert’s legal associates were in motion. Process servers were dispatched to Lucas’s corporate office and to the luxury boutique hotel where the couple had checked in using Chloe’s emergency fundraiser funds.
The siege had begun, but this time, I wasn't the target. I was holding the fortress.
