Chapter 7 - The Empire Crumbles

Two weeks later, I received a formal summons to the United States District Court in New Haven.

Because I had uncovered the initial evidence of Grant’s offshore accounts and money laundering schemes, the Department of Justice requested my cooperation as a key material witness and forensic consultant in the federal criminal case against Grant Holloway, Natalie Price, Dr. Julian Aris, and Marcus Price.

I arrived at the federal courthouse wearing a sharp, tailored black blazer and charcoal trousers—the professional armor I hadn't worn in nearly ten years. As I walked into the conference room on the fourth floor, Assistant U.S. Attorney David Vance stood up from a table covered in bank binders and extended his hand with a warm, genuine smile.

""Mrs. Holloway,"" Vance said, shaking my hand firmly. ""Thank you for coming. I have to tell you, my forensic accounting team spent three days reviewing the documentation you submitted to Judge Whitmore. In fifteen years of prosecuting white-collar fraud, I have never seen an independent audit as clean, precise, and airtight as yours. You didn't just give us a lead; you handed us an open-and-shut case.""

""Thank you, Mr. Vance,"" I replied, taking a seat across from him. ""When you spend a decade hunting down offshore tax shelters for the state, you learn where arrogant men hide their footprints.""

Vance opened a fresh case folder. ""I thought you’d appreciate an update on where things stand. Yesterday afternoon, Marcus Price broke. The moment our agents showed him the wire transfers connecting his shell companies to Holloway Logistics, he signed a full cooperation agreement. He admitted that Grant and Natalie approached him fourteen months ago to set up the Delaware and BVI entities.""

""And Natalie?"" I asked.

Vance chuckled coldly. ""Natalie realized she was facing up to twenty years in federal prison for wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy. Once she discovered that Marcus had flipped, she turned on Grant completely. She surrendered two encrypted flash drives containing emails, text messages, and voice memos documenting Grant’s direct instructions to falsify company tax filings, skim payroll taxes, and siphon marital assets prior to filing for divorce.""

""What about the company itself?""

""Holloway Logistics has been placed under federal receivership,"" Vance explained. ""The court has appointed an independent management firm to keep the trucks running and protect the jobs of the innocent warehouse employees and drivers. However, Grant’s majority ownership shares have been seized under federal forfeiture statutes.""

Vance pulled out a legal document and slid it across the table toward me.

""Because your marital share of the company was unlawfully diverted and subjected to fraudulent concealment, Judge Whitmore and the federal bankruptcy receiver have approved an emergency partial settlement in your civil divorce proceedings.""

I looked down at the paper. My hands trembled as I read the bold type across the top: Interim Distribution of Marital Assets and Restitution Order.

""What does this mean?"" I asked, looking up at the prosecutor.

""It means,"" Vance said with a satisfied smile, ""that the federal government has already clawed back two point four million dollars from Grant’s offshore accounts in the British Virgin Islands. That money has been deposited into a court-monitored escrow account. Under the terms of the restitution order, eighty percent of those recovered funds—one point nine million dollars—is being transferred directly to you as immediate restitution for concealed marital property.""

I stared at the numbers on the page. For months, Grant had choked my bank accounts, forcing me to budget down to the last penny for groceries, threatening to leave me destitute and homeless. Now, with a single signature, I was holding complete financial freedom.

""And there's more,"" Vance added. ""The corporate board of Holloway Logistics, which is now operating under court supervision, held an emergency meeting this morning. They are terminating Grant Holloway as CEO immediately for gross criminal misconduct. Furthermore, the board is aware of your background in corporate compliance and financial management. They have officially submitted an inquiry to the federal receiver requesting that you be appointed as the interim Chairperson of the Board of Directors.""

I sat back in my chair, a breath of pure disbelief escaping my lips.

Grant had tried to strip me of my child, my home, and my dignity. He had called me weak, boring, and incapable. And now, the very company he had stolen from to build his lavish life of lies was begging me to take the helm and save it from ruin.

""Mr. Vance,"" I said, a slow, confident smile spreading across my face as I picked up my pen. ""Tell the board I accept.""
