Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in Glass and Steel

Graham tightened his finger on the trigger, but before the hammer could strike, the living room window exploded inward in a shower of glittering, razor-sharp safety glass.
A flash of dark movement tore through the curtains. Marco Bellini hit the floor in a clean roll, his own weapon drawn and firing before Graham could even pivot his upper body. A single, deafening shot tore through the quiet room.
Graham shrieked as the bullet struck his right shoulder, spinning him around and sending his pistol clattering across the polished floorboards. He collapsed against the bookcase, clutching his bleeding arm, sobbing in agony and utter disbelief.
Marco rose to his feet, brushing glass fragments from his dark wool overcoat with chilling calm. Behind him, three armed operatives poured through the shattered terrace window, securing the room and kicking Graham’s weapon away into the hallway.
Marco did not look down at the groaning man on the floor. He crossed the room in two swift strides, dropped to one knee beside me, and wrapped his arms around my shaking shoulders. ""Are you hurt? Nina, look at me. Did he touch you?""
I buried my face in his chest, inhaling the scent of cedar, clean rain, and cold espresso. ""No,"" I sobbed, the adrenaline finally giving way to overwhelming relief. ""I'm okay. The baby is okay. How did you know?""
""I have monitored the federal transport channels since the day he was booked,"" Marco murmured gently, his hand stroking my hair with a tenderness that made my tears fall freely. ""When his transport van was ambushed by his remaining hired mercenaries, I knew he would head straight here. I was already three blocks away when the power went down.""
Marco stood up, pulling me to my feet and shielding my view as his men dragged Graham to the center of the room. Graham was weeping openly now, the blood soaking through his torn prison uniform, his arrogance completely dismantled.
""Kill me then, Bellini,"" Graham spat, blood flecking his lips. ""Do it! Shoot me in front of her! Show her what a monster you really are!""

Marco stared down at him with an expression of profound, icy disgust. ""Death is too clean for you, Graham. Death means you don't have to wake up every morning in a maximum-security cell in Florence, Colorado, knowing that your wife owns everything you ever dreamed of, while your name is erased from the history of this city.""
Marco nodded toward the federal marshals entering through the front door. ""Take him away. Ensure he receives top-tier medical care. I want him breathing and completely conscious for every single year of his twenty-five-year sentence.""
