Chapter 10 - A Garden in Full Bloom

One year later, the courtyard garden behind Fiora was flooded with warm, golden summer sunshine.

Laughter echoed across the stone terrace as the kitchen staff brought out platters of grilled sea bass, heirloom tomatoes, and crusty sourdough bread. Sitting at the long head table beneath an arbor of blooming white roses, I watched my daughter, Clara, sleep peacefully in a woven bassinet shaded by a linen canopy. She had my dark hair and a fierce, bright curiosity that lit up every room she entered.

Beside me, Marco sat with his arm draped comfortably over the back of my chair, laughing at a joke told by his head chef. He wore a crisp white linen shirt, his expression open, relaxed, and deeply content. The dangerous shadows that had once clung to him like a second skin seemed to have melted away in the warmth of our new life together.

With the twenty-two million dollars legally restored to my name, I had not fled into anonymity. Instead, Marco and I had founded the Ashworth-Bellini Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing safe housing, top-tier legal defense, and financial independence for women trapped in abusive, coercive marriages. We had already helped dozens of women break free from their gilded cages, offering them the exact lifeline Marco had once extended to me on a rainy Thursday night.

Graham Ashworth was an increasingly distant memory, a cautionary tale locked away in a concrete fortress thousands of miles to the west. He had tried to turn me into a paper wall to absorb the impact of his greed, but he had failed to understand that paper can burn, and from the ashes, something entirely unbreakable can rise.

Marco leaned toward me, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead. ""What are you thinking about, my love?"" he asked softly, his hand resting warmly against mine on the white linen tablecloth.

I looked down at our daughter sleeping safely in her cradle, then out across the vibrant garden filled with family, loyalty, and honest laughter.

""I was thinking about the candles I left burning on our anniversary,"" I smiled, intertwining my fingers with his. ""They were meant to mourn the end of a lie. But they were actually lighting the path to the only real truth I have ever known."""
