Chapter 4 - What Lies Beneath the Ledger

The heavy iron door swung open with a hollow groan, admitting Graham Ashworth into the subterranean room. He was wearing his charcoal bespoke suit, his silver tie pinned neatly, his hair styled with the effortless precision of a man who viewed the world as his personal boardroom. But beneath his polished veneer, his jaw was clenched, and his eyes were frantic, darting across the concrete walls and the armed guards stationed in the shadows.
""Nina!"" Graham barked, ignoring Marco entirely. He took two aggressive strides toward me, his hands outstretched in an imitation of frantic marital concern. ""What the hell are you doing down here? Do you have any idea what kind of people these are? Grab your coat. We're going home right now.""
I stood my ground behind Marco’s shoulder, my voice steady and cold. ""You didn't come home for dinner, Graham. You didn't come home because you were busy wiring twenty million dollars to Switzerland under my social security number.""
Graham froze, his arms dropping to his sides. A twitch jumped in his left cheek, the telltale sign of his mask slipping. ""You’ve been going through my computer,"" he hissed, his charming facade fracturing into raw venom. ""You ignorant little girl. You have no idea how high the stakes are. Everything I did, I did to keep us afloat! You lived in luxury because of my work!""
""She lived in a trap because of your cowardice,"" Marco interrupted, stepping squarely into Graham’s path. The difference in their size and presence was immediate. Graham had the hollow confidence of a corporate predator; Marco had the quiet, terrifying gravity of an apex hunter.
Graham sneered, puffing out his chest. ""I know who you are, Bellini. You're an aging waterfront thug pretending to be a restaurateur. My associates at the Moretti firm are already aware I'm here. If I don't walk out of this alley in twenty minutes with my wife, they will dismantle your operations brick by brick.""
Marco didn't blink. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his personal phone, and tapped the speaker button before tossing it onto the desk. A voice crackled through the speaker—rough, elderly, and shaking with genuine terror.
""Marco... please,"" the voice wheezed. ""We didn't know the Ashworth kid was moving against you. We swear on our mothers. He told us he had a clean civilian wrapper for the transfers. We are cutting him loose right now. Do not shut down the dock lines.""
Graham’s face drained of color until his skin matched the white walls of the cellar. ""Mr. Moretti? Wait! Sir, listen to me—""

Marco tapped the red button, cutting off the call with a click that sounded like a gunshot. He took one step closer to Graham, invading his space until my husband had to tilt his head back to maintain eye contact.
""You have no family backing you, Graham,"" Marco whispered softly. ""You have no federal protector, because my men paid a visit to Victoria Vance an hour ago. She has already signed a full confession implicating you in the offshore fraud to save her own career. You are standing in my cellar naked and broke.""
