Chapter 9 - The Final Severance

The nursery in Emily’s new historic brownstone overlooking the Public Garden was filled with morning sunlight.
Little Clara Carter slept peacefully in a white crib, tiny hands tucked beneath her chin. Born slightly premature, she had spent ten days in neonatal care before coming home healthy, robust, and completely untouched by the poison of her father's greed.
A knock sounded at the front door. Diane Vance walked into the parlor, accompanied by Uncle Arthur.
""It’s official, Emily,"" Diane said, setting a certified legal decree onto the coffee table. ""The judge signed the final decree. The divorce is finalized under grounds of marital fraud and criminal misconduct. Full sole legal and physical custody of Clara is granted to you. Garrett’s parental rights have been entirely terminated by court order.""
Uncle Arthur let out a long breath of relief, raising a hand to his eyes. ""Thank God. The monster will never touch that child.""
""What about his sentence?"" Emily asked, sitting beside Clara’s crib with a cup of chamomile tea.
""Eighteen years without parole,"" Diane said with immense satisfaction. ""Between federal wire fraud, state embezzlement, and money laundering, Garrett won't see daylight until his daughter is an adult with children of her own. Vanessa was disbarred for life and received five years of probation.""
The doorbell chimed again.
Roman Vale stepped into the hallway, shaking fresh snow from his dark wool overcoat. He carried a small, velvet-lined box in his hand.
Uncle Arthur and Diane exchanged knowing smiles, excusing themselves into the kitchen to give them privacy.
Roman walked softly into the nursery, looking down at the sleeping infant. His hard, scarred face softened into an expression so tender it took Emily's breath away.
""How is the real boss of Carter Harbor doing today?"" Roman whispered.
""She sleeps through the night now,"" Emily smiled, reaching out to gently touch Clara's cheek. ""She doesn't know how close she came to losing everything.""
""She didn't lose anything,"" Roman said, turning to Emily. ""She has a mother who fought like a lion for her.""
He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a tiny silver sailboat charm, engraved with the words: Clara Carter — Queen of the Harbor.

Emily looked at the charm, her eyes stinging with fresh, joyful tears. ""Roman, it's beautiful.""
""A ship needs a name before it launches,"" Roman murmured, stepping closer until only inches separated them. ""And so does a harbor.""
