Chapter 4 - The Legal Ambush

Over the next forty-eight hours, Emily lived a double life.

By day, she visited high-end baby boutiques, picked out nursery wallpaper, and smiled through prenatal checkups. By night, she met Roman Vale’s team in a nondescript legal suite overlooking the Boston harbor.

Roman's lead attorney, a razor-sharp woman named Diane Vance whose courtroom victories were legendary, laid out the master plan.

""Garrett and Vanessa are using standard boilerplates on top with substituted annexes on the bottom,"" Diane explained, clicking her pen against a thick stack of parchment. ""The trick is simple. When you sign at the dinner, Vanessa will immediately slip the signed signature pages behind a completely different master contract—one that transfers your voting power and signs a blanket indemnity waiver over all Northline liabilities.""

""Can we prove intent to commit fraud?"" Emily asked.

""We already can,"" Roman said, stepping out from the shadow of the window. He dropped a thumb drive onto the desk. ""My team bugged Vanessa’s private office yesterday morning. We have audio of her and Garrett laughing about how you'll be living on a five-thousand-dollar monthly child support allowance while they split thirty million in real estate proceeds.""

Hearing the words spoken by Roman didn't make them hurt less, but the pain had transformed. It was no longer a wound; it was fuel.

""What do we do with the papers?"" Emily asked Diane.

""We swap the binders,"" Diane smiled grimly. ""We prepare identical navy leather presentation folders with the exact same gold Northline Urban insignias Garrett had printed. But our version contains a forensic asset freeze, an immediate shareholder resolution revoking Garrett's executive authority, and an irrevocable transfer of Carter Harbor’s development rights into an independent trust under the joint stewardship of you and Roman Vale.""

Emily looked up at Roman. ""Joint stewardship?""

""Someone needs to fund the harbor’s defense when Garrett files his inevitable emergency injunctions,"" Roman replied smoothly. ""And someone needs to build the commercial freight docks. I provide the capital; you keep sixty percent majority ownership and operational control. Your father’s legacy stays in the Carter name. Forever.""

Emily studied him. ""You’re betting an awful lot of money on a pregnant woman who was crying on a hotel floor two days ago.""

""I don't bet on tears, Mrs. Carter,"" Roman said quietly, his gray eyes locking onto hers with terrifying certainty. ""I bet on what people do after they stop crying.""

Emily picked up the pen and practiced signing her maiden name—*Emily Carter*—firmly across the mock documents.

""Garrett thinks I'm going to fold,"" she murmured. ""Let's make sure the trap snaps clean.""
