Chapter 3 - The Scent of Perfume and Lies

When Emily slipped back into her house in Brookline at two in the morning, the master bedroom was empty. She undressed in the dark, hung her coat neatly in the walk-in closet, and took a hot shower to wash away the lingering ghost of spilled food and cold hotel hallways.
At three-fifteen, the front door clicked.
Garrett entered the bedroom with the cautious quiet of a man who believed he was getting away with murder. He smelled of high-end hotel soap, single-malt scotch, and the faint, powdery trail of jasmine perfume that Emily had never owned.
He slid beneath the duvet, reaching an arm over her waist. His hand rested right over their sleeping child.
""Mmm, Em,"" he murmured, his voice thick with simulated exhaustion. ""Sorry I'm so late. The client was a total nightmare. Mergers never sleep.""
Emily lay stiff as marble, staring into the dark corner of the ceiling. Every cell in her body screamed at her to claw his face, to spit the words Room 1208 into his throat. Instead, she forced her breathing into a slow, rhythmic pattern, mimicking deep sleep.
""Sleep tight, sweetheart,"" he whispered against her hair, kissing her temple before turning his back to snore softly within minutes.
Emily did not close her eyes.
At dawn, she was already sitting at the kitchen island, perfectly dressed in cream cashmere, hair brushed, sipping decaffeinated tea while looking over the morning news. Garrett walked in wearing his designer silk robe, rubbing sleep from his eyes.
""You're up early, babe,"" he said, pouring coffee. ""You shouldn't push yourself. The doctor said you need rest.""
""The baby was kicking,"" Emily said smoothly, offering him a warm, gentle smile that took every ounce of her willpower to construct. ""Garrett, I was thinking about the dinner on Friday at the Union Club.""
Garrett paused, mug halfway to his lips, his predatory instincts instantly on alert. ""What about it?""
""I know I’ve been hesitant about Northline,"" she said, letting her voice sound soft, hesitant, and slightly overwhelmed. ""With my father gone, and the baby coming... it’s just felt so heavy trying to protect his shadow. But you've worked so hard for us. If you truly believe Northline is the safest future for Carter Harbor, I trust you.""
The tension vanished from Garrett's shoulders, replaced by an insufferable, smug glow of victory. He set his mug down, stepped behind her, and wrapped his arms around her neck, pressing his cheek against hers.
""You don't know how happy that makes me, Em,"" he purred. ""I'm doing this for our family. For her."" He tapped her belly lightly. ""I just want you to be free to focus on being a wonderful mother. Let me carry the business burdens.""
""Thank you, darling,"" Emily whispered, feeling the bile rise in her throat. ""Will Vanessa be there to handle the notary stamps?""
May you like
""Of course,"" Garrett said without missing a beat. ""Vanessa knows the paperwork inside and out. She's family, remember?""
""I remember,"" Emily replied, looking down into her tea. ""I remember every single word.""
