Chapter 4 - The Predators Knock

The realization settled over me like ice water. Julian hadn’t brought Chloe and their newborn baby to New York to build a glamorous new life; he was using them as human shields, scrambling to deliver Eleanor’s real estate to loan sharks before his kneecaps were broken. The twenty-thousand-dollar check he had arrogantly shoved into my hand at JFK wasn't an act of generosity—it was the very last dollar he had left in his checking account, offered in a desperate bid to get me out of the doorway before his collectors arrived.
""Does Julian know the lien is invalid?"" I asked, looking up at Arthur through the dim light of the cellar.
""Julian assumed Eleanor was still alive and ignorant of the forgery,"" Arthur explained, closing the heavy wooden hatch. ""He believed he could sweet-talk his mother into signing a deed transfer, or simply forge her signature a second time once you were out of the way. He didn't know that three weeks before she died, Eleanor and I met with the District Attorney's financial crimes unit. We filed a formal declaration of fraud regarding that forged lien. The loan is legally dead against this property. But the men Julian borrowed from do not care about court rulings.""
""Then they will come here looking for Julian,"" I whispered.
""They will come looking for the deed,"" Arthur corrected. ""Which is why you cannot stay here alone tonight. I have arranged a private security detail to monitor the perimeter, but you must know what you are facing. Julian has painted a target on your back.""
""No,"" I said, my voice hardening as I stood up and clutched Eleanor’s leather journal against my chest. ""Julian spent seven years of our marriage treating me like an unpaid servant, and three years acting like I was invisible. He brought his mistress to rub his child in my face while his mother lay in an urn on the mantel. I am not running from this house. Eleanor gave it to me because she knew I had the spine to protect it.""
Arthur studied my face for a long moment, then slowly nodded in respect. ""Then we follow Eleanor’s protocol to the letter. Take the contents of the steel box upstairs. You need to review what is inside before dawn.""
Upstairs in the quiet living room, beneath the soft yellow lamp beside Eleanor’s portrait, I opened the steel lockbox. Inside were three items: an original certified deed dated that very morning, transferring full unencumbered ownership of the Queens brownstone to Elena Vance-Morrison; a safe deposit key to a vault at JP Morgan Chase containing Eleanor’s heirloom diamonds; and an audio cassette labeled simply: FOR JULIAN'S CREDITORS.
At precisely 2:15 AM, the silence of the Queens street was shattered by the low rumble of a heavy engine idling at the curb.
I stood by the second-floor window, peering through the lace curtains. A sleek black SUV with tinted windows had parked directly in front of the house. Two large men in heavy dark overcoats stepped out onto the wet asphalt. One of them carried a manila folder, while the other scanned the darkened windows of the brownstone.
My cell phone buzzed on the windowsill. It was an unknown international number.
I swiped to answer, bringing the phone to my ear without speaking.
""Elena?"" Julian’s voice was trembling, breathless, backgrounded by the cheap hum of a neon motel sign and the distant blare of highway traffic. ""Elena, please! Listen to me! Did anyone show up at the house? Did two men knock?""
""Why would two men knock at two in the morning, Julian?"" I asked coldly.
""Elena, you have to run! Chloe and I are at a motel near LaGuardia. They tracked me from Montreal! They know where Mom lived! If you don't give them the paperwork from the basement safe, they’re going to burn the house down with you inside!""
May you like
""There is no paperwork in the basement safe, Julian,"" I said, watching the two men walk deliberately up the stone steps toward my front door. ""There is only what you created. And unlike you, I don't run from bills when they come due.""
I hung up the phone before he could reply, took a deep breath, and walked down the mahogany stairs to meet the wolves at the door.
