Chapter 2 - The Eviction at Midnight

The door opened before Julian could reach for the brass handle. Standing in the doorway was Arthur Vance, Eleanor’s personal attorney of thirty-five years, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the local precinct. Arthur was a tall, stoic man with iron-gray hair and wire-rimmed glasses, carrying a thick leather briefcase stamped with the insignia of his Manhattan law firm. He glanced at Julian, then at Chloe, who was frantically bouncing the crying infant against her chest, and finally gave me a polite, solemn nod.
""Elena, my dear. I apologize for the delay. The traffic across the Queensboro Bridge was atrocious,"" Arthur said smoothly, stepping inside and wiping his polished shoes on the doormat.
""Arthur!"" Julian shouted, seizing on the attorney like a drowning man clutching a fraying rope. ""Thank God you're here! This crazy woman is trying to pull a scam with an old letter. She claims my mother disowned me. Tell her that my father’s trust and Mom’s estate transfer directly to the sole surviving male heir. Tell her right now!""
Arthur Vance set his briefcase flat on the dining room sideboard, next to Eleanor's photograph. With calm precision, he snapped the brass clasps open and withdrew a navy blue folder bound with official court seals. He didn't look at Julian with pity or anger; his expression was completely detached, the look of an executioner reading a routine decree.
""Julian,"" Arthur began in an even, measured tone, ""your mother had full legal capacity until forty-eight hours before her passing. In fact, she underwent three independent psychiatric evaluations, recorded on video, to ensure that no claims of undue influence could ever be substantiated in probate court. I personally oversaw the drafting and execution of her final last will and testament eight months ago.""
Chloe stepped forward, her veneer of chic Parisian sophistication cracking completely. ""That's impossible! Julian is her son! You can't just cut a son out for his wife! Julian has a child now—Eleanor’s grandson! Liam has rights to this house!""
""Liam,"" Arthur replied, casting a cool glance toward the baby, ""is not recognized in any trust document. Furthermore, Julian, your mother was keenly aware of your sudden flight to Montreal. She was also made aware by our forensic accounting team that you embezzled approximately four hundred and twenty thousand dollars from her secondary investment portfolio in the months preceding your departure. Eleanor chose not to press criminal charges during her lifetime on one condition.""
Julian’s throat bobbed. ""What condition?""
""That you remain absent,"" Arthur stated flatly. ""She considered that money your advance on any inheritance you might have imagined you deserved. The remainder of the estate—including this property valued at three point two million dollars, the commercial retail spaces on Northern Boulevard, and all liquid accounts—was transferred into an irrevocable trust. The sole trustee and primary beneficiary of that trust is Elena.""
""No!"" Chloe screamed, her face flushed crimson. ""Julian, do something! We gave up our lease in Canada! All our furniture is in a container ship in New Jersey! We don't have a place to stay!""
""You have twenty thousand dollars,"" I said, pointing toward the bank draft Julian had shoved into my hands at JFK, which was still resting on the foyer table where he had casually tossed it. ""Isn't that what you told me at the airport, Julian? 'Take the money and make things easy.' Well, take your own advice. Take your money, take your mistress, take your five designer suitcases, and get off my property.""
""Elena, you bitch!"" Julian roared, taking a violent step toward the table.

Instantly, the two police officers stepped between him and me. ""Step back, sir,"" the taller officer commanded, resting a heavy hand on his duty belt. ""Mr. Vance has presented the deed of ownership and an active trespass order registered in Ms. Elena's name. You have no legal standing to remain on this premises. Grab your luggage and exit the building immediately, or you will spend the night in central booking.""
Julian looked around the room—at his mother’s portrait looking down at him with unyielding eyes, at the attorney who had known him since childhood, and at me, standing straight, unbothered, and completely in control. He realized, with crushing clarity, that every trap he had set for me had snapped shut around his own neck.
