Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Con

Preston stopped dead in his tracks. His jaw dropped. ""What did you say?""

""I said you belong here,"" I repeated, my tone as cold and detached as a surgeon's blade. ""You stole thirty million dollars from your father's firm. You forged his signature. You mortgaged our family home to an organized crime syndicate. And you abandoned your ten-year-old daughter to celebrate a child that was never yours.""

""I was drugged!"" Preston yelled, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson as the veins in his neck bulged. ""She did something to me, Nora! Celeste... Vanessa... whatever her name is! She targeted me! Don't you understand? I am the victim here! She set me up!""

""Nobody forced you to sleep with her, Preston,"" I said. ""Nobody forced you to run out of our divorce hearing like a coward. Nobody forced you to laugh in my face when I asked where you were going.""

Preston sank onto the edge of the unmade hospital bed, burying his face in his hands. A dry, pathetic sob tore through his throat.

""She told me she loved me,"" he whimpered into his palms. ""She told me she wanted to build an empire together. She told me you were holding me back... that you were small-minded, provincial... that you didn't have the vision for the life I deserved. She made me feel like a king, Nora. Every single day, she told me I was brilliant.""

""She told you what your vanity wanted to hear,"" Danielle said mercilessly, stepping forward with her briefcase. ""And while your vanity was being stroked, she emptied your bank accounts. Here is the preliminary forensic summary from the State Police Financial Crimes Division.""

Danielle tossed a bound twenty-page dossier onto the plastic table.

Preston stared at it as if it were a venomous snake. ""What is that?""

""It’s your life's autopsy, Mr. Callaway,"" Danielle said. ""Vanessa Vance didn't just meet you by accident at that charity gala in Chicago last year. She was hired by a consortium of short-sellers who were heavily betting against Callaway Holdings' municipal bond issues. They knew you were the weakest link in the family structure. They spent eighty thousand dollars profiling your psychological vulnerabilities: your chronic insecurity regarding your father, your compulsive need for female adulation, and your utter arrogance regarding legal compliance.""

Preston looked up, his eyes hollow with horror. ""Hired? By who?""

""It doesn't matter who hired her,"" I said. ""What matters is what she left behind. She left your father facing an SEC investigation that will likely strip Callaway Holdings of its commercial trading license. She left your mother unable to buy groceries on her credit cards. And she left a dying baby in the ICU upstairs.""

Preston snapped his head toward me. A look of visceral disgust twisted his features. ""Don't speak to me about that bastard! That child isn't mine! Let the county throw it in a foster home! I don't give a damn if that little mongrel rots!""

The words hung in the air, putrid and vile.

I looked at the man I had slept beside for twelve years. I looked at the hands that had held my daughter when she was a newborn. I felt no anger. I felt no heartbreak. I felt only a profound, crystalline clarity. Some people are not broken by tragedy; tragedy merely strips away their expensive clothes and reveals the rotten scaffolding that was always there.

""The baby isn't rotting, Preston,"" I said softly. ""The baby is currently in open-heart surgery. Because I signed the authorization.""

Preston blinked, stunned. ""You? Why would you do that?""

""Because unlike you, I don't measure the value of a human life by whose name is stamped on the trust fund.""

I stepped forward and placed the faded blue manila folder on top of the police report.

""Do you recognize this, Preston?""

Preston’s eyes drifted to the yellowed paper, and in an instant, every remaining drop of color drained from his face. His lips parted. He began to hyperventilate.

""Where... where did you get that?"" he choked out.

""Your mother gave it to me,"" I replied. ""She brought it to Danielle's office this morning.""

Preston reached out with trembling fingers, touching the corner of my father's patent documents. ""Mom gave this to you? She... she promised me. She swore on her father's grave she would never look in that safe deposit box.""

""Your mother realized something you have never understood,"" I said. ""When a ship sinks, the rats don't care about the family crest. She gave me this because she thought I would use the money to save Callaway Holdings. She thought I would be the good, submissive little daughter-in-law who buys her husband out of prison.""

""Will you?"" Preston gasped, falling to his knees on the cold floor, looking up at me with desperate, pleading eyes. ""Nora, please! You have twenty-seven million dollars in that patent reserve! You can post my corporate bail! You can settle with Edmund's creditors! We can fix this! We can get the house back! For Reese, Nora! Think about Reese!""

May you like

I looked down at him kneeling at my feet.

""Do not ever speak my daughter's name again.""
