Chapter 2 - The Collapse of an Empire

We did not go to the Callaway-affiliated downtown hotels where the valets bowed and the concierge knew my father-in-law's preferred vintage of Scotch. Instead, I drove Reese thirty miles north to a boutique bed-and-breakfast tucked into the rolling hills outside the county line. I paid in cash from an emergency fund I had quietly accumulated over three years of watching my marriage rot from the inside out.

By eight o’clock that evening, my phone was blowing up.

There were forty-two missed calls from Preston. Nineteen from Miriam. Eleven from Preston’s younger brother, Julian, who ran the family's European logistics branch. There was also a single text message from Danielle Marsh, my attorney:

Nora, do not answer your door. Do not speak to Preston. Turn on the local business news immediately.

I turned on the small television mounted above the antique dresser in the guest room. Reese was in the bathroom, humming softly while she unpacked her toothbrush and pajamas.

The screen flickered, showing the towering glass facade of Callaway Tower in the financial district. A banner rolled across the bottom of the screen in violent yellow text: CALLAWAY HOLDINGS FACES LIQUIDITY FREEZE AMID FRAUD ALLEGATIONS; COMMERCIAL PAPER DEFAULT LOOMS.

A grim-faced business anchor was speaking into a microphone outside the city municipal building:

""...reports indicate that executive vice president Preston Callaway authorized several high-value treasury transfers earlier today without secondary board ratification. Sources within the state attorney general’s office confirm that an emergency freeze has been placed on domestic operational accounts following an unauthorized disbursement exceeding thirty million dollars to offshore entities based in the Cayman Islands and Cyprus. Compounding the corporate turmoil, local law enforcement confirms an active investigation into a high-profile extortion ring targeting commercial executives...""

A photograph of Preston appeared on the screen. It was his official corporate headshot—sharp jaw, arrogant grin, bespoke Italian tie, the portrait of an untouchable prince who believed the rules of ordinary human decency were written for people of lesser bloodlines.

My phone rang again. This time it was Danielle. I answered.

""Where are you?"" Danielle asked, her voice crackling over the car speaker. She was clearly driving.

""Safe. Outside the city. Reese is getting ready for bed.""

""Good. Stay there. Nora, you have no idea the bullet you just dodged. If that divorce decree had been delayed by even forty-eight hours, Edmund's corporate creditors would be filing liens against your personal marital equity. Because the judge signed that order at two-fifteen this afternoon, your settlement is legally segregated from Preston’s liabilities.""

""Edmund said Preston gave her authority over the company’s short-term accounts,"" I said, sitting on the edge of the queen-sized mattress. ""How is that even possible? Edmund never let Preston sign a lease without two senior partners co-signing.""

""Preston forged Edmund’s digital authentication token,"" Danielle said coldly. ""He used the corporate power-of-attorney Edmund granted him last year during Edmund's hip replacement surgery. He thought he was buying an offshore tax-shielded luxury estate to hide assets from you during post-divorce discovery. Celeste—or whoever she really is—spent four months convincing him that you were going to hire forensic accountants to bleed him dry. She played him like an amateur poker player at a professional table. She convinced him that if he moved the capital under her LLC before the final decree was entered, you wouldn't be able to touch a penny of it.""

I leaned back against the headboard, listening to the hum of the television. ""He tried to rob his own daughter.""

""He tried to leave you and Reese with fifty thousand dollars and a sixty-day eviction notice from a house tied up in a family trust,"" Danielle confirmed ruthlessly. ""Instead, he handed the keys to his family’s primary cash reserves to a woman who probably doesn't even hold an American passport. And that's not the worst part.""

""What's the worst part?""

""The infant,"" Danielle said, her voice dropping into solemn gravity. ""The baby has a congenital cardiac defect that required immediate neonatal surgery two hours after birth. Because the mother used forged documents and vanished, and because Preston is neither the biological father nor legally married to the mother, the hospital has no legal guardian to authorize the follow-up procedures. Preston is currently under temporary psychiatric hold at the county clinic after he tried to assault the head of hospital security.""

I closed my eyes. The image of the empty courtroom returned to me: Preston jumping up, his attorney grabbing his sleeve, his face filled with sneering disdain as he tossed twelve years of devotion into the trash for a woman who was already plotting his destruction.

""What is Edmund doing?"" I asked.

""Edmund is trying to save the company from bankruptcy. But Miriam... Miriam is in the lobby of my office building right now, Nora. She drove here in her personal car without her driver. She’s sitting on the bench in the lobby, crying in front of my security staff. She says she won't leave until she speaks with you.""

May you like

""Tell her to go home, Danielle.""

""I did. She said she has something that belongs to you. Something Preston hid five years ago.""
