Chapter 8 - The Falling Facade

Gregory’s head snapped toward Arthur so violently I could hear his neck pop. His jaw went slack, his eyes bulging as if the oxygen had been completely sucked out of the room.

In the front row, Samantha let out an involuntary, choked squeak, her hands flying to her mouth.

""What?"" Gregory blurted out, breaking all courtroom decorum and jumping to his feet. ""What did you say?""

Judge Rodriguez slammed her gavel down with thunderous fury. ""Mr. Vance! Sit down this instant or I will have the bailiff take you into custody for contempt!""

""Seventy-three... seventy-three million?"" Gregory gasped, his chest heaving, his face drained of every drop of blood. He pointed a shaking finger at me across the aisle. ""She won seventy-three million dollars? That’s marital property! We were married on October 12th! We’re still married right now! That’s my money! Half of that is mine!""

Bradley Vance grabbed Gregory’s arm, trying desperately to yank him back into his chair, but Gregory was completely unhinged.

""Evelyn! You bought that ticket with my money! You lived under my roof! You owe me that money!"" he screamed, his voice cracking into a shrill, hysterical pitch.

""Counsel, control your client immediately!"" Judge Rodriguez ordered, her voice cold as ice.

Arthur stood unbothered, adjusting his cuffs. ""Your Honor, submitted as Exhibit C is the time-stamped transaction receipt from the Shell station on Route 4, dated October 11th at 7:14 PM, purchased with Mrs. Cross’s personal cash card derived from her independent design checking account. Submitted as Exhibit D is the security doorbell footage from the marital residence at 6:14 AM on October 12th, showing Mr. Gregory Vance entering the home with Miss Samantha Sterling-Cole, announcing in clear, unambiguous audio: 'I'm finished pretending this marriage is working. Pack up your belongings. I'm leaving you for her.'""

Arthur looked directly at the judge. ""Under Title 14, Section 8 of our state domestic relations code, a spouse who intentionally and unequivocally effects an open, physical abandonment of the marital domicile for the purpose of initiating cohabitation with an adulterous partner formally fixes the date of marital economic separation to that precise moment. The ticket was retained solely by Mrs. Cross, validated post-separation, and Mr. Vance has zero legal, equitable, or statutory claim to any trust proceeds.""

Gregory collapsed into his chair, his trembling hands clutching his head as if his skull were about to fracture.

He was doing the math in his head. The numbers were crushing him. Seventy-three million dollars. He had walked away from seventy-three million dollars for an overnight fling and a five-thousand-dollar lowball settlement. If he had simply come home on Friday like he was supposed to, if he had hugged me, if he had acted like a decent human being for five minutes, we would have celebrated together. We would have shared everything.

Instead, he had walked through the front door, spat in my face, and kicked me to the curb.

Judge Rodriguez reviewed the timestamped exhibits, her pen scratching against the parchment with deliberate slowness. When she looked up, there was no pity in her eyes—only the cold disdain of a judge who had seen greed destroy foolish men a thousand times before.

""The plaintiff’s motion for emergency relief is denied in its entirety,"" Judge Rodriguez ruled crisply. ""Furthermore, the court finds prima facie evidence of intentional conversion regarding the duplex rental funds. Mr. Gregory Vance is ordered to deposit one hundred and ninety thousand dollars into an escrow account within thirty days, surrender all keys to the marital property immediately, and pay five thousand dollars in attorney’s fees for bringing a frivolous emergency petition. This court is adjourned.""

The gavel struck.

Gregory didn't move. He sat there, staring blankly at the polished table, completely catatonic.

Samantha didn't wait for him. Without saying a single word, she grabbed her designer purse, turned on her heel, and marched out of the courtroom, desperate to distance herself from the radioactive wreckage of Gregory’s life before the reporters outside figured out who she was.
