Chapter 7 - Courtroom 4B

Courtroom 4B was packed with morning spectators, junior associates from Gregory’s firm who had come to watch their golden boy crush his ex-wife, and a visibly smug Samantha sitting in the front row, wearing a cream designer suit and looking at her watch as if this were an inconvenient errand before her spa appointment.
Gregory sat at the plaintiff’s table beside his lawyer, Bradley. He was wearing his best tailored charcoal suit, his posture straight, his chin tilted up with that familiar, patronizing smirk. When I walked through the swinging wooden doors with Arthur Vance and Marcus Hayes, Gregory didn't even look me in the eye. He simply scoffed and whispered something into Bradley’s ear, prompting a low chuckle from his counsel.
Judge Eleanor Rodriguez took the bench, her sharp dark eyes scanning the thick stack of motions in front of her with clear irritation. She adjusted her glasses and tapped her gavel twice.
""We are here regarding the matter of Vance versus Vance, emergency motion for temporary relief and asset preservation,"" Judge Rodriguez declared. ""Mr. Bradley Vance, you have five minutes to explain why this court should entertain an emergency liquidation of a residential property on seventy-two hours' notice.""
Bradley stood up, buttoning his jacket with dramatic flair. ""Your Honor, my client, Mr. Gregory Vance, has been the sole economic engine of this marriage for over six years. His wife, Evelyn, has generated negligible income, contributed nothing to the principal equity of the marital residence, and upon learning of the breakdown of the marriage, maliciously locked my client out of his home. She has engaged in financial recklessness by securing an illegal, undocumented private encumbrance to pay off the mortgage, deliberately attempting to cloud title and deplete the marital estate. We request an immediate court-ordered sale of the home and temporary spousal support paid to Mr. Vance while he relocates.""
Judge Rodriguez looked over the top of her glasses, her expression flat. ""Mr. Arthur Vance, your response?""
Arthur stood up smoothly, picking up a slim manila folder. ""May it please the court. First, the property in question was purchased with an initial down payment of $180,000 derived entirely from my client’s non-marital inheritance, as documented in Exhibit A. Second, the subsequent mortgage payments made from Mr. Gregory Vance’s account were funded dollar-for-dollar by unauthorized transfers from Mrs. Vance’s commercial duplex, as proven by the forensic audit in Exhibit B.""
Gregory shifted uncomfortably in his seat, leaning forward to hiss at Bradley, who was frantically flipping through his binder.
""Furthermore,"" Arthur continued, his voice ringing through the room with absolute authority, ""Mr. Vance claims to be the sole economic engine of this union. Yet, over the last three fiscal years, my client has operated a specialized intellectual property design consultancy. Which brings us to the payoff of the residential mortgage.""
""Yes,"" Judge Rodriguez interrupted, leaning forward. ""Where did the three hundred and forty thousand dollars come from, Mr. Vance? Did your client incur substantial third-party marital debt without her husband's knowledge?""
""No, Your Honor,"" Arthur replied calmly. ""The mortgage was satisfied using liquid personal funds held by the Cross Horizon Irrevocable Trust, of which Mrs. Evelyn Cross is the primary grantor and sole beneficiary.""
Bradley scoffed loudly. ""Your Honor, this is ridiculous! A shell trust created last week to conceal marital funds! Where did this trust acquire liquidity? She’s a failed freelance artist!""
Arthur turned slowly, looking directly at Gregory, whose smirk had suddenly frozen into a mask of uneasy apprehension.
""The trust acquired its liquidity on October 12th,"" Arthur announced with deafening clarity. ""When Mrs. Evelyn Cross claimed the grand prize of the state Power Mega-Ball lottery, totaling seventy-three million dollars, which she acquired using her own separate cash hours before Mr. Vance formally abandoned the marital domicile to reside with his paramour.""

The entire courtroom went dead silent.
A spectator in the third row dropped a pen; the plastic click echoed against the mahogany walls like a gunshot.
