Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Fortress

Arthur Vance’s downtown office occupied the forty-second floor of the city's most prestigious glass tower, overlooking the sparkling harbor. When his assistant escorted me into the walnut-paneled corner conference room, Arthur wasn't alone. Sitting across from him were two men: Marcus Hayes, a renowned tax strategist, and Victoria Sterling, an elite private wealth manager known for handling multi-million-dollar anonymous trust structures.
Arthur stood up immediately, shaking my hand with warmth and sharp professional respect. ""Evelyn, thank you for moving so quickly. Let’s get straight to business. Let me see the ticket.""
With steady hands, I retrieved the laminate sleeve from my jacket and set it on the polished mahogany table. Marcus Hayes adjusted his spectacles, took out an illuminated magnifying glass, and meticulously compared the printed security serials, barcode sequences, and draw date numbers against the official state lottery database displayed on his laptop monitor.
""It’s completely legitimate,"" Marcus breathed after three tense minutes, looking up with genuine awe. ""The lump-sum cash option after federal and mandatory state withholding comes out to approximately forty-two million, eight hundred and sixty thousand dollars. Deposited in clean, liquid funds within fourteen business days.""
""Now, let’s discuss Gregory,"" Victoria Sterling said, leaning forward with a predatory smile. ""Has he filed an official complaint for dissolution of marriage?""
""No,"" I answered. ""He told me this morning that he would have his attorney draft papers next week, provided I sign a quitclaim deed transferring the house to him for five thousand dollars.""
""A breathtaking display of legal stupidity,"" Arthur chuckled darkly, leaning back in his leather chair. ""Under state statutes, marital property rights are evaluated based on the legal date of separation or the date of service, whichever is formally established. However, sudden windfall assets acquired while a marriage is de facto broken down can be subject to protracted discovery battles if the spouse catches wind before the claim is formalized.""
""Which is precisely why Gregory will never see a single penny,"" Marcus stated, opening a thick leather binder. ""We will establish the 'Cross Horizon Irrevocable Blind Trust' in the state of Delaware, utilizing a Wyoming private trustee corporation. Arthur will act as the legal fiduciary representative. Under our state's lottery transparency exemptions, anonymous claims are permitted when the prize is collected by a registered corporate trust vehicle to prevent public harassment.""
""What about the house and the duplex?"" I asked.
Arthur opened the folder of bank statements I had brought from my basement. He skimmed through the certified deeds and inheritance deposit slips, his eyebrows climbing higher with every page.
""Evelyn, this isn't just your house—Gregory has committed clear, actionable financial misappropriation,"" Arthur revealed, pointing a pen at a series of transactions. ""The duplex was deeded exclusively to you through your grandmother's trust. The rent from that property was diverted directly into Gregory’s personal trading accounts, which he then used to service the mortgage on your primary residence. In the eyes of the court, he hasn't been supporting you; he has been illegally skimming from your separate non-marital inheritance.""
""So he has no claim to the property?"" I asked.
""Quite the contrary,"" Arthur smirked. ""He owes you roughly one hundred and ninety thousand dollars in back rent, plus interest, and you hold sole title to the house. If he wants to live there with Samantha, he will be doing so as an illegal trespasser.""
A sense of intoxicating clarity washed over me. For years, Gregory had gaslit me into believing that without his salary and corporate status, I would starve in the street. He had used money as a leash to keep me docile, obedient, and silent.
""What do you want me to do next, Arthur?"" I asked.
""Sign these trust incorporation documents,"" Arthur said, sliding a gold pen toward me. ""Then go stay at a private executive hotel under our firm’s corporate account. Do not return to that house until Monday morning. Let Gregory settle in. Let him bring his mistress’s luggage through the front door. Let him believe he has conquered your world.""

""And then?"" I asked, gripping the pen.
Arthur smiled, his eyes glinting like cut glass. ""And then, Evelyn, we drop the sky on his head.""
