Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage Collapses

By noon, the news of Daniel’s sudden ouster had rippled through the city's commercial real estate community like a seismic shockwave.

Daniel sat in his sports car in the underground parking garage, surrounded by three cardboard boxes containing his family photographs, brass desk ornaments, and personal golf trophies. His phone was ringing continuously—calls from panicked business associates, bank managers, and junior partners demanding explanations. He ignored them all, staring at the polished steering wheel with vacant eyes.

When he finally returned to the luxury penthouse, Brooke was lounging on the terrace, flipping through an expensive fashion catalog while listening to pop music.

""You're home early,"" she called out cheerily, not looking up. ""Did you remember to transfer the balance for my summer wardrobe? The boutique manager called twice this morning saying the card was declined. It was so humiliating, Daniel. You really need to fix your accounting department.""

Daniel dropped his briefcase onto the floor with a hollow thud. He looked around the pristine apartment—the minimalist Italian furniture, the imported artwork, the expansive view of the harbor—and felt a wave of cold terror wash over him.

""Pack your bags, Brooke,"" he said, his voice flat and lifeless.

Brooke lowered her sunglasses, frowning. ""What did you just say?""

""I said pack your things. We have to vacate this apartment.""

Brooke stood up, laughing nervously. ""Is this a joke? We signed a two-year lease on this place. You promised me we’d stay here until the custom estate in the hills was finished.""

""The lease wasn't in my name,"" Daniel said, running his trembling hands through his thinning hair. ""The lease was signed by Miller Commercial Properties. Claire just terminated the corporate lease. The building management issued an eviction notice for non-authorized occupants effective at the end of the week.""

Brooke’s face lost all its warmth, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. ""What do you mean, Claire? What does your boring housewife have to do with our apartment?""

""She controls the holding company, Brooke!"" Daniel shouted, finally losing his temper. ""She owns fifty-one percent of the voting equity! She had me removed from the board this morning! The accounts are frozen! My cards are cancelled! Don't you understand? Every single dollar I spent on this place, on your clothes, on that car parked downstairs—it was all tied to the family trust!""

Brooke took a step back, staring at him as if he were a complete stranger who had wandered into her home. ""You told me you were worth thirty million dollars. You told me you owned the entire company.""

""I ran the company!"" Daniel pleaded, reaching out to touch her arm. ""I have the contacts! I have twenty-five years of industry experience! Once the divorce proceedings begin, I’ll get a fair settlement. We can start a new development agency together. It's just a temporary cash-flow hiccup. We just need to find a smaller apartment for a few months until the legal dust settles.""

Brooke pulled her arm away with violent disgust. ""A smaller apartment? Live in some cheap rental while you fight your ex-wife in court for scraps? Are you out of your mind?""

""Brooke, listen to me—""

""No, Daniel, you listen to me,"" she sneered, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. ""I didn't waste nine months listening to you complain about your wife just to end up living in a one-bedroom walk-up. You promised me security. You promised me luxury. If you don't even have access to your own bank account, what good are you to me?""

Daniel stared at her, feeling as though the ground had vanished beneath his feet. The affectionate, attentive woman who had stroked his ego and made him feel young and invincible had vanished in an instant, replaced by a ruthless opportunist counting her losses.

""You never cared about me at all, did you?"" Daniel whispered.

""I cared about the man who took me to Paris and bought me five-thousand-dollar handbags,"" Brooke said coldly, walking toward the bedroom to retrieve her designer luggage. ""Now get out of my way. I have calls to make.""
