Chapter 10 - The Sunday Morning Tradition

Sunday morning arrived clear and radiant, the spring sky an endless expanse of crisp, brilliant sapphire blue.

The gravel parking lot of Miller’s Diner was bustling with families, churchgoers, and local regulars arriving for breakfast. The aroma of sizzling bacon, fresh waffle batter, and dark roast coffee drifted through the warm morning air as the diner's brass entrance bell chimed rhythmically.

The door swung open, and Noah dashed inside, clutching his toy dinosaur in one hand and Lily’s hand in the other.

""Booth Four! Booth Four!"" Noah chanted excitedly, weaving between the tables.

""Hold on, little explorer,"" Lily laughed, catching up to him.

Claire walked in behind them, wearing a soft pastel yellow cardigan and simple slacks, her face radiant with joy and ease. Several regular patrons waved and greeted her warmly as she passed.

Marcy met them at the corner of the restaurant, already holding a steaming pot of fresh coffee and a tall glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.

""Morning, family!"" Marcy chimed happily, gesturing toward the corner booth.

The booth had been completely restored. The rich navy leather gleamed beneath the soft morning sunlight streaming through the clean windowpanes.

Noah scrambled into the inside seat against the wall, laughing as he arranged his dinosaur next to the sugar dispenser. Lily sat beside him, opening her menu with a contented sigh.

Claire paused for just a second, looking at the familiar booth.

Twenty-six years of memories were woven into that corner. She had sat there when Lily was learning to hold a spoon. She had sat there celebrating business milestones, family birthdays, and quiet Sunday mornings.

And she had sat there four months ago, watching a foolish man try to steal her peace.

Claire smiled, slid into her side of the booth, and leaned back comfortably against the soft leather panel, feeling the warm morning sun rest gently against her shoulders.

""Grandma,"" Noah said, looking up from his menu with complete seriousness. ""Today I'm having chocolate chip pancakes with extra whipped cream.""

""Are you sure?"" Claire asked, her eyes twinkling with warmth and amusement. ""Not blueberry?""

""Definitely chocolate chip. I'm sticking to my choice.""

""A very wise decision, Noah,"" Claire said, taking Lily's hand across the table and squeezing it gently.

Marcy poured the coffee into Claire’s cup, the rich aroma filling the space between them.

""Everything looks perfect today, Claire,"" Marcy said, smiling down at the table.

Claire looked at her daughter, looked at her grandson, and took a slow, sweet sip of her coffee.

""Yes, Marcy,"" Claire whispered, her heart completely full, peaceful, and free. ""Everything is exactly where it belongs."""
