Chapter 2 - The Taste of False Victory

Across town in an opulent penthouse overlooking the river, Daniel tore off his silk tie and hurled it onto the Italian leather sectional. His jaw ached from clenching his teeth throughout breakfast, and the bitter taste of cold diner coffee still lingered on his tongue.

""I don't understand why you're so agitated,"" Brooke whined, kicking off her pointed-toe heels and pouring herself a glass of chilled white wine from the marble wet bar. ""You said she was going to scream. You said she’d cause a scene, call me names, and make a fool of herself in front of everyone. But she didn't even flinch, Daniel. She looked at me like I was a speck of dirt on a windowpane.""

""Shut up, Brooke,"" Daniel snapped, pacing across the polished hardwood floors. ""You don't know Claire. She has pride. That diner booth has been hers since Lily was in diapers. Every Sunday morning, rain or shine, we sat in that exact corner. She fought the restaurant owner when they tried to remodel it ten years ago. She doesn't just let someone else sit there.""

""Well, she did,"" Brooke said with a sharp laugh, swirling the pale wine in her crystal glass. ""She sat right there, ate her eggs, fed her grandson, and walked out without shedding a single tear. Maybe she’s just relieved you’re finally out of her hair. Honestly, why do you even care so much? You have me now. You have this place. You have the company.""

Daniel didn't answer. He stared out through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the sprawling skyline below. Something was fundamentally wrong, and the unease in his gut was growing like a shadow.

When a woman has been betrayed after nearly three decades of devotion, she screams. She smashes wedding photos. She empties bank accounts or hires aggressive divorce lawyers who bombard your office with angry threatening letters. She calls your mother crying. She demands an explanation in the middle of the night.

Claire had done none of those things.

When Daniel packed his suitcases eleven weeks ago, Claire had simply stood by the doorway, her arms folded, her expression completely unreadable. She hadn't begged him to stay. She hadn't asked about Brooke. She hadn't even raised her voice. She had merely said, ""Make sure you leave your front door key on the foyer console, Daniel. I don't want to change the locks before the weekend.""

He had interpreted her icy calm as utter shock. He convinced himself that she was paralyzed by grief, sitting alone in their four-bedroom colonial house, mourning the loss of the dashing, wealthy husband who had provided her with an easy suburban life. He had orchestrated the diner confrontation specifically to break that stoic facade, craving the validation of her jealousy. He wanted Brooke to see that he was a man worth fighting over.

Instead, Claire had looked through him as if he were made of thin glass.

His smartphone buzzed sharply on the glass coffee table, breaking the tense silence. Daniel reached down and swiped the screen, expecting a routine update from his head of marketing.

It was an automated notification from the corporate headquarters of Miller Enterprises—the commercial property firm he had spent twenty-five years running.

Notice of Extraordinary Board Assembly: Monday, 9:00 AM. Attendance Mandatory for All Voting Directors.

Daniel frowned, his eyebrows knitting together. ""An extraordinary board meeting? Frank didn't say anything to me on Friday.""

Frank Miller was the senior legal counsel and corporate secretary, an old friend of Claire’s family who had handled the firm’s paperwork since its inception. Daniel dialed Frank’s private office line immediately, tapping his foot impatiently against the floorboards.

The line rang four times before clicking into voicemail.

""Frank, it's Daniel. What is this automated board meeting notice on my calendar for tomorrow morning? We don't have a scheduled quarterly assembly until the end of November. Call my mobile as soon as you get this.""

He hung up, feeling an icy prickle of apprehension crawl up his neck.

""Is something wrong with work, honey?"" Brooke asked, gliding over to drape her manicured arms around his tense shoulders, her heavy perfume filling his senses.

Daniel pushed her hands away roughly, his eyes fixed on the gray sky outside. ""I need to review some financial statements. Don't disturb me for the rest of the evening.""
