Chapter 7 - The Reality Check

Arthur stood up beside me and looked down at his son with an expression of cold finality. ""Here is how this is going to go, Caleb. Your crypto venture has already been liquidated. The attorneys at my firm handled the seizure this morning under the terms of your business loan default.""
Caleb’s jaw dropped. ""You liquidated my fund?! That was my future!""
""No, that was your escape hatch,"" Arthur countered smoothly. ""The remaining capital—roughly two hundred and forty thousand dollars—has been transferred into a trust fund in Elodie’s name. You will have zero access to the principal, and zero say in its distribution. Tessa is named as the sole custodial trustee until Elodie turns twenty-five.""
Caleb looked like he was about to faint. ""Dad, that's everything I saved! You can't just steal my money!""
""It's not your money, Caleb. You used my commercial credit line as collateral to secure the offshore leverage. Read your original partnership agreement, page forty-two. I own the underlying debt. If you want to sue me, go ahead and hire a lawyer. But considering your personal bank account currently holds two thousand dollars and your consulting company's primary corporate client is my logistics group, I suggest you think very carefully about your next move.""
Arthur turned to me, his expression softening instantly into that of a protective, loving father figure. ""Tessa, the condo is yours. I am transferring the deed directly into your name, free and clear of any mortgages. You and Elodie will never have to worry about a roof over your heads, or whether you can afford to turn on the heat, the water, or the lights. Ever.""
""Arthur... I don't know what to say,"" I stammered, tears spilling freely down my cheeks. ""This is too much. I can't take this from you.""
""You aren't taking anything from me, child,"" Arthur said gently, taking both of my hands in his. ""I failed to raise my son to be an honorable man. That is my cross to bear. But I will not allow my granddaughter to grow up in a home where cruelty is disguised as discipline. You gave everything to bring that little girl into the world. You deserve security, peace, and respect.""
Caleb sat between us, utterly ruined. In the span of seven days, he had gone from a self-proclaimed household dictator to a man who had lost his leverage, his secret fortune, his father's respect, and the unconditional trust of his wife.

""What about me?"" Caleb choked out, his voice small and pathetic. ""Where am I supposed to go?""
""You're going to my secondary warehouse in Trenton,"" Arthur answered without missing a beat. ""You're going to work on the inventory loading dock for the next six months. You'll make twenty-two dollars an hour, you'll live in a company studio apartment, and you will pay forty percent of your wages in direct child support to Tessa. If you complain, if you quit, or if you show up late, I cut you off completely. No trust fund. No inheritance. No family name.""
