Chapter 1 - The Cold Reality

Standing in the hallway with shampoo suds dripping into my eyes, my breath caught in my throat. Caleb was standing by the linen closet, his hand still resting on the small metal wrench he used to tamper with the cutoff valve under our hallway panel. But he was not alone. Behind him, looming like a thundercloud in the entryway, stood his father, Arthur Bennett. Arthur had dropped by unannounced, a duffel bag in one hand and a baby gift box in the other.

The silence that stretched between the three of us was suffocating. I clutched my thin terrycloth robe tightly around my trembling body. My skin was freezing, sticky with lather, and cold water dripped steadily from my hair onto the hardwood floor.

""What is going on here?"" Arthur asked, his voice low and vibrating with cold authority. He was a self-made contractor who had built an entire logistics empire from scratch, a man of few words and immovable morals.

Caleb turned pale. He tried to hide the wrench behind his back and offered a nervous, pathetic laugh. ""Hey, Dad. You're early. I was just... helping Tessa manage her morning routine. You know how crazy things get with a newborn.""

Arthur didn’t smile. His steel-gray eyes moved from Caleb’s guilty face down to the digital kitchen timer hanging next to the bathroom doorframe, which was flashing zeros and beeping relentlessly. Then Arthur looked at me. His gaze softened with immediate horror and empathy as he saw the dried baby formula on my collar, the dark purple bags beneath my eyes, and the soap burning into my neck.

""Tessa,"" Arthur said gently, stepping past his frozen son. ""Go back in there. Turn the shower back on.""

""The water is off, Dad,"" Caleb stammered, stepping forward to block him. ""Look, we have a budget. Tessa takes too long, and our utility bills are skyrocketing. Plus, Elodie was crying. I had to get her attention.""

Arthur grabbed Caleb by the collar of his designer polo shirt with a quickness that shocked both of us. He shoved Caleb against the hallway wall with one massive hand, his knuckles white. ""You shut the water off on your wife? Six weeks after she pushed your child into this world? Are you out of your miserable mind?""

""Dad, you don't understand the expenses!"" Caleb choked out, his face turning bright red under his father's iron grip. ""I work hard all day to pay for this mortgage! She just stays home!""

""She is keeping your daughter alive while you sit on your backside behind a closed door!"" Arthur bellowed, loud enough to shake the picture frames on the wall. He released Caleb with a look of utter disgust, picked up the wrench from the floor, and wrenched the cutoff valve completely open. Then, he turned to me. ""Tessa, sweetheart. Lock the door. Take thirty minutes. Wash your hair in hot water. When you come out, your daughter will be fed, burped, and sleeping, and your husband will have a very clear understanding of what a man's responsibilities actually are.""

Tears sprang to my eyes, burning hot against the dried lather on my cheeks. I nodded numbly, stepped back into the bathroom, and turned the deadbolt. As the warm water roared back to life, I sank to the tile floor and wept tears of pure relief. For six weeks, I had felt like an invisible servant drowning in my own exhaustion. But outside that door, Arthur was roaring at Caleb with a fury that promised things were about to change drastically.

Under the steaming spray, I took my time. I scrubbed away weeks of sweat, milk, and tension. I let the hot water wash over my back until my skin turned pink. For the first time since giving birth, I wasn’t watching a countdown clock. But as I finally turned off the faucet and wrapped myself in a clean towel, the heavy tension waiting outside made my stomach twist into knots.
