Chapter 5 - The Contract And The Diamond

The word hung in the air like a live wire sparking over gasoline.
“Fiancée?” I choked out, coughing on my breath. “Julian, are you insane? Nobody is going to believe that you—the most cold-blooded, reclusive bachelor in New York—suddenly got engaged to your junior financial analyst!”
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, swirling his bourbon. The ice clinked against the crystal glass. “On the contrary. The entire city knows I am ruthless, calculating, and impossible to compromise. An elite society heiress would look like a political merger. But an office romance? A passionate, reckless obsession with a brilliant young woman I couldn't keep my hands off?” He tilted his head, studying me with intense deliberation. “The city will eat it alive. Nikolai will assume my guard is down because I’m blinded by lust.”
“Are you?” I blurted out before I could filter myself.
Julian froze. His gaze turned scorching, burning straight through the cashmere sweater to my bare skin beneath. He stood up slowly, rounding the table until he stood directly behind my chair. He placed his large, warm hands on the backrest, leaning down until his breath stirred the hair against my neck.
“If you think my desire for you is an act, Harper,” he whispered, his voice dark and velvet smooth, “you’re far less observant than your spreadsheets suggest.”
A shiver of electric heat cascaded down my spine, rendering me completely speechless.
Julian reached into the pocket of his dark jeans and pulled out a velvet box. With a quiet snap, he opened it under the low ambient light of the loft.
Resting inside was a flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring so massive it looked like it belonged in a museum vault. The platinum band was intricately engraved with tiny ivy vines—the Rourke family insignia.
“Hold out your left hand,” he murmured.
“Julian, I haven't agreed to this—”
“Harper,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Either you walk into that gala on my arm with my ring on your finger, or Nikolai’s hitmen will hunt you down the second you step outside this door. This isn’t a negotiation. It’s survival.”
Reluctantly, my fingers trembling, I lifted my left hand.
Julian took my hand in his. His skin was rough, calloused from years of violence, yet his touch as he slid the cold platinum ring onto my fourth finger was impossibly gentle. The ring fit perfectly, as if it had been forged specifically for me.
“It fits,” I whispered, staring down at the blinding stone.
“Of course it does,” Julian said quietly, his thumb lingering on the back of my hand, stroking the sensitive skin. “I don't make mistakes about measurements.”
Suddenly, the loft’s security alarm blared.

A high-pitched red strobe light painted the brick walls in crimson. The wall monitors flickered to life, showing three armed men in black tactical gear cutting through the metal service door on the ground floor.
Mikhail’s voice crackled through the intercom: “Boss! They found the perimeter! Breached the loading dock! We have three minutes before they reach the stairs!”
