Chapter 6 - Desperate Measures

Over the next forty-eight hours, the Hale family empire began to implode from within.

The emergency asset freeze had hit them with the force of a wrecking ball. Because Preston had intertwined his personal accounts with Hale Enterprises’ operational credit lines, the freeze triggered an automatic compliance alert at three major commercial banks. Credit lines were halted, vendor payments bounced, and the rumors began to spread through the city's financial elite like wildfire.

By Wednesday morning, my phone was ringing incessantly. First came the calls from Martin Voss, offering eight million dollars, then twelve million, then fifteen million. I didn't answer a single one. Every message went straight to voicemail.

At noon on Wednesday, there was an aggressive pounding at the front door of my suburban townhouse. I checked the security camera on my phone. Arthur and Vivian were standing on the porch. Gone was the pristine ivory designer suit Vivian had worn to court; she was wearing an oversized trench coat, dark sunglasses, and a frantic, haggard expression. Arthur looked like he hadn't slept in two days, his hair unkempt and his expensive shirt wrinkled.

I opened the door, keeping the security chain engaged. “Can I help you?”

“Amelia, take the chain off,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a desperate, hushed tone. “We need to talk to you right now. In private.”

“We have nothing to discuss without opposing counsel present, Arthur,” I said coolly. “You know that contact between parties during active litigation is strictly prohibited.”

“Screw the rules!” Vivian cried, pushing past her husband toward the crack in the door. “Amelia, look at what you’re doing to us! The banks have frozen our personal checking accounts! My credit cards were declined at the pharmacy this morning! Do you have any idea how humiliating that is?!”

“Probably about as humiliating as having your husband hand you divorce papers over coffee and tell you seven years of your life meant nothing,” I said, my voice ice.

Arthur put his hand against the doorframe, visibly struggling to maintain his composure. “Amelia, listen to me. I just found out what Preston did. I spent the last twenty-four hours going through the company books with our chief financial officer. He... he took money from the firm. Millions of it.”

“I know,” I replied simply.

Arthur’s eyes went wide with shock. “You know? How could you possibly know that?”

“Because I am an investigator, Arthur,” I said. “I spent years tracking military supply chains through war zones. You thought I was just an uneducated girl from the Midwest who got lucky by catching your son’s eye. But I spent the last seven years watching Preston mismanage every single subsidiary you handed him. The moment he tried to steal my share of our life together, I pulled every thread until the whole sweater unraveled.”

Vivian began to weep openly, burying her face in her hands. “Amelia, if this goes public tomorrow, Hale Enterprises will go under. Three hundred people will lose their jobs. Preston will go to prison! He’s your husband! How can you be so heartless?!”

“He stopped being my husband the second he decided to treat me like an obstacle to be discarded,” I replied, staring directly through Vivian’s tears. “And where was this concern for family when you were helping him pick out jewelry for Chloe Bennett? Where was your mercy when you laughed at me in that courtroom on Monday?”

Vivian choked on her words, unable to answer.

“Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, we go before Judge Morrison,” I said firmly. “Tell your son to bring his passport, his signed confession, and his full power of attorney. If he tries to lie one more time, the documents I submit tomorrow won't just go to the family court judge. They’ll go straight to the Department of Justice.”

I closed the door and turned the deadbolt, leaving the Hales standing alone on my front porch, finally tasting the bitter cold of their own arrogance.
