Chapter 3 - Cracks in the Dynasty

Martin Voss jumped up like he had been struck with a cattle prod. “Your Honor, an asset freeze would cripple my client's commercial operations! Hale Enterprises is currently negotiating a fifty-million-dollar acquisition that requires liquidity. Freezing his operational capital over unproven allegations would cause irreparable financial harm!”
“Irreparable harm?” I countered immediately, stepping forward to the podium. “What about the irreparable harm done to the marital estate, Mr. Voss? What about the three million dollars Preston siphoned from our mutual savings account just forty-eight hours after I was served with papers? That was not operational capital for Hale Enterprises. That was personal property subject to equitable distribution under state law.”
Judge Morrison slammed her gavel down with an echoing bang that caused Voss to visibly wince. “Enough! Mr. Voss, I have looked over the preliminary bank statements provided by Mrs. Hale. These documents bear official federal audit stamps. If even ten percent of what is contained in this folder is true, your client is looking at consequences that reach far beyond family court.”
She leaned over her bench, glaring down at Preston. “Mr. Hale, did you transfer twenty-four million dollars out of joint domestic accounts into offshore holdings without your wife’s knowledge or consent?”
Preston looked desperately at Voss. Voss shook his head faintly, whispering frantically into his client’s ear, instructing him to take the Fifth Amendment. But Preston was too arrogant to keep his mouth shut. He had spent his entire life talking his way out of trouble, relying on his family name to insulate him from reality.
“It's my family's money!” Preston shouted, standing up and shoving his chair back across the carpet. “My father built Hale Enterprises! She didn't earn a single penny of it! She sat in my house, drove the cars I paid for, and lived like royalty for seven years! She’s entitled to nothing!”
“Mr. Hale, sit down immediately!” the judge commanded, her voice dropping into dangerous territory.
“Preston, shut your mouth!” Arthur hissed from the front row, his face turning an alarming shade of purple. The patriarch of the Hale family was finally waking up to the nightmare unfolding before them. He was a businessman who understood the law, and he knew that his son’s reckless arrogance was about to drag the entire family empire into public ruin.
Preston didn't listen. He pointed an accusatory finger across the aisle at me, his eyes blazing with venom. “You think you’re so smart, Amelia? You think you can outplay me? You were nobody when I found you! Just a washed-up veteran living in a tiny apartment! I gave you everything, and this is how you repay me? By trying to ruin my life?!”
I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice. I simply stood there, perfectly composed, letting his unhinged rage fill the courtroom and burn into the official stenographer's transcript. In military law, we called this letting the target walk into the kill zone. The louder he yelled, the deeper the hole he dug for himself.
“Mr. Hale,” Judge Morrison said, her voice eerily calm, “you have shown this court an extraordinary level of contempt. Not only have you repeatedly disrupted these proceedings, but your statements clearly indicate a profound disregard for the laws of this state regarding marital property.”
She picked up her pen and signed a document with sharp, decisive strokes. “I am granting Mrs. Hale’s emergency motion. An immediate temporary restraining order is issued freezing all personal and corporate accounts associated with Preston Hale, pending a full forensic evaluation. Furthermore, Mr. Hale will surrender his passport to the clerk of court before leaving this building today.”

“What?!” Preston gasped, stumbling backward against his legal team's desk.
“And finally,” Judge Morrison added, looking directly at Martin Voss, “in light of the evidence of perjury regarding the initial financial disclosures, I am scheduling a full evidentiary hearing for three days from today. If your client fails to produce every ledger, every offshore corporate registration, and an itemized accounting of the funds diverted to Miss Chloe Bennett, I will refer this matter directly to the United States Attorney’s Office for criminal prosecution.”
