Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vale

Adrian hung limply between the two security operators, his knees buckling under his own weight. The arrogant master of the house had been reduced to a shivering, broken shell of a man. The contrast between his pristine surroundings and his utter devastation was stark. The crystal chandelier overhead cast sparkling rainbows across the blood-splattered marble, a glittering mockery of the life he thought he had mastered.

""Adrian,"" my father began, his voice echoing in the vast, empty room. ""For three years, you believed you were a financial genius. You looked down on my daughter, treating her like an unwanted dependent whose only purpose was to manage your household and stroke your fragile ego. But you never possessed an ounce of talent. Your investments succeeded because I manipulated the markets in your favor. Your business partners signed contracts with you because they knew my shadow stood behind you.""

Adrian shook his head slowly, tears of humiliation burning his eyes. ""You... you built me up just to destroy me?""

""No,"" I answered, stepping forward as the medic finished wrapping my wounds. I stood tall, wrapped in my father’s charcoal coat, feeling the strength returning to my limbs with every heartbeat. ""He built you up to see if you would share your success with me. If you had loved me, if you had treated me as your partner and equal, today you would have been named the primary heir to the entire Sterling Global portfolio. You would have commanded billions across four continents.""

Adrian’s mouth fell open, his eyes widening in sheer, unfathomable agony as the reality of what he had thrown away washed over him like a tidal wave of molten lead. ""Heir... to Sterling Global?""

""You had the world in your hands, Adrian,"" I continued, looking directly into his hollow eyes. ""All you had to do was be a decent man. All you had to do was keep the vows you made to me at the altar. But the moment you tasted a fraction of wealth, your true nature emerged. You became cruel, petty, and arrogant. You brought your mistress into our home. You humiliated me in front of the servants. And tonight, you raised a weapon against me.""

""Evelyn, please!"" Adrian sobbed, falling forward until his forehead touched my shoes. ""I was blind! I was a fool! Give me one more chance! We're married! We took vows before God! You can't just discard me like this! I can change, I swear to you! Punish me, take all the money, but don't leave me!""

I looked down at the man I had once believed was my sanctuary. There was no hatred in my heart—only a deep, cold, and absolute indifference.

""Sign the papers, Adrian,"" I said quietly.

Eleanor stepped forward and produced a leather-bound document: a comprehensive, uncontested divorce settlement. It stripped Adrian of every asset, every stock option, every intellectual property right, and every bank account bearing the Vale name, returning everything to the Sterling Family Trust. In exchange, the Sterling legal team agreed not to file state criminal charges for attempted murder, allowing him instead to face the purely financial and fraud charges brought by the federal government.

""If you sign,"" Eleanor stated, ""you will serve five to seven years in a minimum-security federal facility for securities fraud. If you refuse, the high-definition video of you striking Miss Evelyn two hundred times will be delivered to the district attorney within ten minutes. You will be indicted for aggravated assault, torture, and attempted second-degree murder. You will spend thirty years in a state penitentiary.""

Adrian looked at the pen held out to him. His hand trembled so violently he could barely hold it, but he had no choice. With tears blinding his eyes and snot running down his upper lip, he scrawled his signature across the dotted line, signing away his wealth, his marriage, and his freedom.
