Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

""Please, Alexander... Sir! Let me explain!"" Adrian fell to his knees, his hands clasped together in desperate supplication on the very spot where I had bled moments earlier. All his arrogance, all his sneering confidence, and all his masculine pride had vanished entirely, replaced by the pathetic sniveling of a trapped coward. ""I love Evelyn! She’s my wife! We had a terrible argument—passions ran high! Vanessa manipulated me! She poisoned my mind against my own wife!""
""Adrian, you bastard!"" Vanessa screamed from the sofa, the muzzle of the rifle still hovering inches from her face. ""You told me you were going to lock her in a mental asylum next week so we could take her life insurance!""
A deadly silence fell over the room. I looked up at Adrian from the floor, my stomach turning with absolute disgust. I had known he was cruel; I had known he was disloyal and self-absorbed. But hearing that he had planned to institutionalize me—to erase my existence entirely so he and his mistress could live off my death—shattered whatever lingering ghost of grief remained in my heart.
My father’s eyes narrowed into slits. He reached into his vest pocket, retrieved a gold-plated fountain pen, and looked down at his chief legal counsel, a sharp-faced woman who had just stepped through the shattered doorway carrying a thick leather dossier.
""Eleanor,"" my father said calmly. ""Begin.""
Eleanor opened the folder and began reading in a crisp, emotionless tone that sounded like the tolling of a funeral bell. ""At 9:15 PM, Sterling Global Holdings executed an emergency foreclosure on the Sterling-Vale residential estate. This house is no longer your property, Mr. Vale. At 9:17 PM, all intellectual property, commercial leases, and operating capital of Vale Capital Partners were seized under default clauses section 4A and 9B of your original seed capital contract. At 9:22 PM, the Securities and Exchange Commission was handed sixteen gigabytes of encrypted financial records demonstrating seven years of systematic tax evasion, insider trading, and corporate embezzlement executed by your personal accounts.""
Adrian’s breath came in ragged gasps. ""No... no, no, you can't prove that! My private server is encrypted! It’s in a secure vault downstairs!""
""Your private server was mirrored onto our secure cloud four months ago, Adrian,"" I spoke up, leaning against the shoulder of the medic who was gently wrapping a sterile dressing around my lacerated arm. ""Do you remember the diamond pendant you gave me on our first anniversary? You thought you bought it at a luxury auction in New York. My father’s team swapped it out three days before the sale. It’s a high-gain military-grade data transmitter. Every time you brought your laptop into our bedroom, every time you made an offshore transaction while sitting beside me, my father’s intelligence analysts were watching every keystroke.""
May you like
Adrian looked at the pendant resting against my chest, his face draining of every drop of blood until he looked like a corpse. ""You... you were spying on me from the very beginning?""
""No,"" I whispered, shaking my head with cold clarity. ""I was protecting myself. My father taught me never to enter a cage without holding the key. You thought you were the predator, Adrian. But you were merely an experiment. And tonight, your trial period expired.""
