Chapter 8 - The Criminal Indictment

The hammer fell on a crisp Tuesday morning in mid-November.
Julian had taken refuge in Evelyn’s sprawling country manor, hiding behind locked iron gates and private security. He had spent the last month drinking heavily, firing two sets of defense attorneys who told him his case was unwinnable, and issuing desperate public statements claiming he was the victim of a coordinated corporate conspiracy.
At 6:30 AM, three black SUVs from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by county sheriff units, arrived at the gates of the Vance estate.
When the private security guard refused to open the gate, the lead federal vehicle used a heavy steel ram to breach the barrier, splintering the ornamental iron. The convoy swept up the winding driveway, tires churning gravel.
Agents in tactical vests surrounded the perimeter while the lead investigator pounded on the double mahogany doors.
Evelyn opened the door in a silk dressing gown, shrieking at the top of her lungs. "How dare you trespass on private property! I am a member of the historical society! I will call the governor!"
"Federal agents with a warrant for Julian Vance," Special Agent Martinez stated, pushing past her with two uniformed deputies. "Step aside, ma'am."
They found Julian in the upstairs study. He was wearing an unbuttoned dress shirt, an empty bottle of scotch sitting on his mahogany desk, frantically feeding financial ledgers into a cross-cut paper shredder.
"Julian Vance, step away from the machine and put your hands behind your back!" Agent Martinez commanded, drawing his firearm.
Julian turned, his face flushed and wild with rage. "This is private enterprise! You have no jurisdiction here! Elena is behind this! She orchestrated this whole thing!"
"You're under arrest for federal wire fraud, tax evasion, conspiracy to commit perjury, and witness tampering," the agent declared, forcing Julian against the wall and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Mom! Call Senator Hayes! Call the legal team!" Julian screamed as he was hauled down the grand staircase in front of his weeping mother.
"Julian!" Evelyn cried, stumbling across the Persian rug. "You can't take him! He’s a Vance!"
"Tell it to the federal magistrate, ma'am," the deputy replied coldly.

Outside, neighbors watched from their manicured lawns as the proud, untouchable heir of Vance Enterprises was pushed into the back of a marked cruiser in handcuffs, his head ducked low to avoid the camera lenses of the news crews that had followed the police scanner.
The video of Julian’s arrest went viral across social media within hours. The narrative had flipped permanently. Julian was no longer the successful, polished businessman fighting an erratic wife; he was exposed as a reckless, arrogant criminal who had attempted to steal from his own child.
