Chapter 7 - Chloe’s Confession

Two weeks after Julian was ousted from his company, I received an unexpected phone call from a blocked number. When I answered, the voice on the other end was frantic, breathy, and tearful.

"Elena? Please... don't hang up. It’s Chloe."

I leaned against the kitchen window, watching Maya play tag with our golden retriever in the backyard. "You have five seconds before I block this number, Chloe."

"Please! Julian is trying to pin everything on me!" Chloe cried, her composure completely shattered. "He told the federal investigators that Apex Logistics was entirely my idea! He’s claiming I forged his signatures and embezzled the four million dollars without his knowledge!"

A cold smile touched my lips. "Julian always burns his bridges, Chloe. You knew what kind of man he was when you slipped that diamond bracelet on your wrist."

"He bought that bracelet with money taken from Maya’s trust fund!" Chloe blurted out, her voice cracked with panic. "I didn't know that then, I swear! Look, Elena... I have text messages. Hundreds of them. Audio voice notes from WhatsApp where he tells me exactly which accounts to create, how to forge the consulting invoices, and how he planned to bribe the child custody evaluator!"

I paused, calculating the leverage instantly. "Why are you calling me instead of the police?"

"Because the district attorney is filing grand larceny charges against me by Friday unless I provide state’s evidence," she sobbed. "My lawyer says if you vouch for my cooperation, if you accept my formal deposition and turn over the matching forensic timeline, the prosecutor will offer me immunity in exchange for testifying against Julian."

"Where are you?" I asked.

"In a motel near the interstate. Julian canceled my lease on the apartment he rented for me. He left me with nothing, Elena! He took my car keys, canceled my phone plan... he told me I was disposable garbage!"

I took a deep breath. Chloe had willingly participated in a scheme designed to rip my child from my arms and leave me destitute. She deserved every consequence coming her way. But I also knew that her inside testimony would slam the prison gates shut on Julian forever.

"Bring every device, every thumb drive, and every printout to my attorney's office at ten tomorrow morning," I told her firmly. "You will sign a full, unreserved sworn affidavit detailing every crime Julian committed, including his conspiracy to commit perjury and child endangerment. You do that, and I will recommend leniency on the corporate charges."

"I will! I'll give you everything!" she wept.

"And Chloe?" I added before hanging up.

"Yes?"

"Bring the bracelet. It belongs to my daughter."
