Chapter 4 - Stripped Bare

Judge Thorne leaned back in her high leather chair, taking off her glasses. The look she gave Julian was one usually reserved for predatory felons.

"In thirty-two years on the bench, Mr. Vance, I have rarely witnessed such an abhorrent display of domestic cruelty, subornation of perjury, and blatant attempt to weaponize a six-year-old child against her mother."

Julian swallowed hard, attempting to recover his polished persona. "Your Honor, tensions were high. Chloe and I... we had private conversations that were exaggerated out of frustration. I love my daughter more than life itself. I was trying to protect her from—"

"Do not insult my intelligence," Judge Thorne interrupted. "You deliberately attempted to orchestrate a fraudulent mental health narrative against your wife, you suborned perjury, you intimidated a minor witness, and you have committed extensive, systemic financial fraud under the jurisdiction of this court."

She picked up her pen and began signing orders with sharp, decisive strokes.

"Effective immediately, temporary legal and physical custody of Maya Vance is awarded exclusively to the mother, Elena Vance. Mr. Vance’s visitation rights are completely suspended pending a full criminal psychiatric evaluation and child protective risk assessment."

"Suspended?!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking into panic. "You can’t take my daughter from me!"

"I just did," Judge Thorne responded coldly. "Furthermore, the court finds substantial prima facie evidence of dissipation and concealment of marital assets. I am issuing an immediate freeze on all domestic and offshore accounts linked to Julian Vance, Apex Logistics, and all subsidiary entities. The court appoints an independent receiver to take control of Vance Enterprises' operating funds."

Chloe gasped, clutching Julian's arm. "Julian, my salary! My consulting fees!"

"Get off me!" Julian snarled, shoving her hand away in full view of the court. Chloe stared at him in utter shock as the man who had whispered sweet promises of European villas turned on her like a cornered dog.

"Mrs. Vance," Judge Thorne addressed me, her tone completely respectful. "The marital residence is awarded to you for your exclusive use. Mr. Vance will be accompanied by two sheriff's deputies this evening between the hours of seven and eight to collect his personal clothing and toiletries only. If he comes within five hundred yards of you or the child outside of that window, he will be arrested on sight."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I said, bowing my head.

"We are not finished," Judge Thorne added, turning her cold gaze back to Julian. "Because this court finds deliberate falsification of sworn financial affidavits, I am ordering Mr. Vance to deposit a temporary security retainer of five hundred thousand dollars into the court registry by five o'clock tomorrow afternoon to cover Mrs. Vance’s living expenses and retroactively fund the child’s trust. If that deposit is not made, a bench warrant will issue for his immediate arrest."

Julian slumped back into his chair, looking as if the air had been violently sucked from his lungs. The courtroom behind him was buzzing with energy.

I packed my binders into my briefcase, snapped the brass locks shut, and walked past Julian’s table without offering him so much as a glance.
