Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Reckoning

Three weeks later, the municipal detention center in lower Manhattan smelled of industrial bleach and damp concrete—a stark, brutal contrast to the imported fragrance that had always lingered around Vanessa Vale. She sat behind the scratch-resistant acrylic partition, wearing an oversized bright orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed and pulled into a sloppy knot, her once-flawless nails broken and unpolished.
When the guard ushered me into the visitor stall, Vanessa looked up with eyes burning with unadulterated hatred. She slammed her handcuffed palms onto the metal shelf.
""Did you come here to gloat, Grace? To show off your enormous belly and your new status as the queen of real estate?"" she spat, her voice crackling through the small metal speaker between us. ""You think you're clever, don't you? You think you won!""
I placed my hands gently over my stomach, feeling the rhythmic, comforting kicks of my daughter, who was now only two weeks away from her due date. ""I didn't come to gloat, Vanessa. I came to deliver a legal notice.""
I slid a folded court document through the transfer slot beneath the partition.
Vanessa glanced down at it suspiciously. ""What is this? Another lawsuit?""
""It’s a formal seizure order for every asset purchased with funds diverted from the Whitmore operating account,"" I explained calmly. ""The sports car Andrew bought you, the luxury condominium in Tribeca where you took him, the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and the diamond hair clip you were wearing in my lobby. It was all purchased using embezzled escrow deposits that belonged to the ground trust.""
Vanessa laughed, but the sound was hollow, trembling with hysterical despair. ""You can't take everything! My lawyers will file for bankruptcy protection! I have an ivy-league education, I have connections, I have friends on Wall Street who will bail me out the moment this scandal dies down!""
""Your friends on Wall Street are currently testifying before a federal grand jury to save their own licenses, Vanessa,"" I said, leaning closer to the speaker. ""Marcus Vance turned over the audio recordings from your private strategy dinners. The prosecutors have forty hours of you explaining exactly how you planned to drug my prenatal vitamins with mild labor-inducing compounds so that I would be hospitalized during the Sterling closing and unable to sign the ground covenants.""
Vanessa recoiled as if she had been struck across the face with an iron bar. Her eyes widened in genuine, paralyzing horror. ""That... that was just talk! I was venting! I never actually did it!""
""Dr. Sterling analyzed the medication bottles Daniel recovered from your assistant's desk,"" I told her, my voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. ""You altered the prescription capsules with oxytocin supplements. You were willing to risk the life of an unborn child just to ensure a corporate deal closed on schedule.""
""No... no, please..."" Vanessa began to hyperventilate, pressing her forehead against the scratched glass, tears finally spilling down her hollow cheeks. ""I didn't want to hurt the baby... I just needed the money! I owed millions to European creditors who threatened to ruin me! Andrew promised he would take care of it!""

""The U.S. Attorney has upgraded your charges to include attempted aggravated assault resulting in reckless endangerment of an unborn infant,"" I stated, standing up from the metal stool with regal composure. ""You will not be posting bail, Vanessa. And when you finally walk out of a federal penitentiary in fifteen years, you will not have a single penny, a single credential, or a single friend left in this city.""
I turned my back on her as she began to scream and beat her fists against the partition, her desperate cries quickly drowned out by the heavy clanging of the iron security doors closing behind me.
