Chapter 3 - The Broken Vow

By seven in the evening, the rain had turned into a relentless downpour that battered the panoramic glass windows of the 45th-floor executive lounge. I sat on a deep velvet armchair, sipping warm herbal tea while Dr. Sterling monitored my blood pressure. My daughter was moving restlessly, sending sharp ripples across my swollen stomach, reacting to the lingering adrenaline that still coursed through my veins.
The heavy lounge door creaked open. Andrew stood in the entryway, having discarded his drenched coat and tie. He looked battered, stripped of the polished, impenetrable armor he had worn for every public appearance during our four years of marriage. He looked like the desperate man he truly was.
""Dr. Sterling, could you please give us ten minutes?"" Andrew pleaded, his voice cracking with genuine anguish.
Dr. Sterling looked at me, waiting for my permission. I gave a slight nod. ""Wait outside, Robert. If my heart rate climbs, come straight back in."" The doctor packed his stethoscope and closed the door firmly behind him, leaving me alone with the man whose child I was carrying.
Andrew didn't dare sit on the sofa across from me. Instead, he dropped to his knees on the Persian rug, burying his face in his hands just inches from my feet. A billionaire, one of the most powerful real estate scions on the eastern seaboard, reduced to a weeping supplicant on the floor of his own tower.
""Grace... please,"" he choked out, shoulders shaking with muffled sobs. ""I never meant for Vanessa to cross that line. I swear to you, I tried to end it three months ago. The moment you showed me that first ultrasound, the moment I heard our baby’s heartbeat... I realized what a monster I had become.""
""Then why was she wearing your shirt in the lobby today, Andrew?"" I asked, my voice devoid of warmth, like an executioner reading a predetermined sentence. ""Why did she have the master biometric key to our penthouse? Why did she have my suitcase packed and thrown onto the marble floor like garbage?""
""Because she was blackmailing me!"" Andrew lifted his head, his eyes bloodshot, tears tracking through the stubble on his cheeks. ""Six months ago, Mother made an unauthorized fifty-million-dollar speculative short against commercial real estate bonds. Vanessa facilitated the transaction through an offshore entity. When the market rallied, the trade blew up. Vanessa told me that if I didn't give her full equity partnership in the Sterling development—and push you out with a quiet, low-ball postnuptial settlement—she would release the audit trails to the SEC. Mother pressured me every day, telling me that you were disposable, that you wouldn't understand the complexities of corporate survival, that our family name would be dragged through federal prison.""
""And you believed her?"" I looked down at him with profound pity. ""You thought throwing the pregnant mother of your child to the wolves was an acceptable price to pay for your mother's criminal vanity?""
""I was a coward, Grace!"" he cried out, clutching at the hem of my maternity dress before I pulled the fabric away from his fingers. ""I thought if I gave Vanessa enough access to run the closing, she would hand over the offshore drives, and then I could pay her off and disappear with you to our estate in North Carolina! I was trying to preserve something for our daughter!""
""No, Andrew. You were preserving your pride,"" I said, setting my teacup on the marble side table with a steady click. ""You let another woman mock me, humiliate me, and strip me of my medication while you hid behind your spreadsheets. You broke your vow the second you allowed her to touch the home I built for our family.""

""I will give you everything,"" Andrew whispered, clutching his chest. ""I will sign a full confession. I will resign from Whitmore Capital. I will hand over every single share I own to a blind trust in our daughter's name. Just don't take her away from me, Grace. Please don't take my family.""
""Your family ended the moment that elevator opened and you admitted she was your mistress,"" I replied, standing up with careful deliberation and looking down at him. ""Now get up off the floor, Andrew. You have an emergency board meeting to attend. And you're going to introduce the new chairman of the land trust.""
