Chapter 4 - The Exposure of the Paper Trail

The click of the handcuffs around Grant Mercer’s wrists in the green room echoed like a death knell for his social standing.
Socialites and board members who had spent years kissing his ring stood by the velvet curtains, whispering and snapping clandestine photographs on their phones.
By midnight, the arrest footage had leaked to every major news outlet in the country:
BILLIONAIRE CHARITY HEIR ARRESTED AT HIS OWN BENEFIT; MISTRESS CHARGED IN HORRIFIC ASSAULT ON PREGNANT WIFE.
Inside my quiet hospital suite, the room was bathed in the soft glow of the monitor screens.
Evelyn sat by the window with her laptop open, reviewing the comprehensive forensic audit Arthur Vance’s team had assembled over the past seventy-two hours.
"Look at this, Claire," Evelyn murmured, turning the screen toward my hospital bed.
"He didn't just try to frame you for mental instability to take the baby."
"He’s been shorting Mercer Logistics stock through a shell company in the Cayman Islands registered under Sloane Avery’s maiden name."
I traced the digital ledger with my bandaged right hand, the splint holding my fractured metacarpal steady.
"He needed forty million dollars to cover his margin calls on the Singapore exchange," I deduced, my analytical instincts sharp despite the pain medication.
"That's why he wanted me locked away in a private psychiatric facility before the quarter closed."
"Under the terms of my father's trust, if I am incapacitated, my fifty-million-dollar maritime portfolio defaults to Grant's unrestricted management."
"He was going to strip your family's legacy clean to bail out his reckless gambling debts," Evelyn said, her voice shaking with profound maternal grief.
"I raised a monster, Claire. I spent thirty years believing his charm was leadership, while ignoring the cold, hollow narcissism rotting underneath."
"You didn't raise a monster, Evelyn," I whispered, reaching out to touch her arm.
"You gave him every opportunity to be honorable. He made the conscious choice to sell his soul for greed and vanity."
The door opened softly, and Arthur Vance walked in, carrying a signed court order from the Chief Judge of the Chancery Division.
"The emergency injunction was granted twenty minutes ago," Arthur reported, a triumphant smile touching his lips.
"Every personal account, corporate credit card, and private jet access code held by Grant Mercer has been revoked."
"His passport has been surrendered to federal marshals, and the court has assigned Evelyn as the sole interim trustee of his remaining voting stock."
"And what about bail?" I asked, watching the monitor as another mild contraction rippled through my belly.
"The judge set Sloane Avery's bail at two million dollars, which her family cannot afford after their business ties with us were severed," Arthur answered.

"And Grant was denied bail entirely under the flight-risk statute, thanks to his secret offshore accounts."
"He will be spending the next sixty days in Cook County Jail awaiting his preliminary hearing."
