Chapter 2 - The Hospital Fortress

The siren of the private ambulance wailed through the slick streets of downtown Chicago, cutting through the gridlocked evening traffic.

Inside the medical cabin, two paramedics stabilized my bleeding hand with sterile dressings while checking the fetal monitor strapped around my belly.

The rhythmic, galloping thump of my baby’s heartbeat filled the small space, bringing hot tears of overwhelming relief to my eyes.

"Baby’s heart rate is elevated, but stable at one-forty," the lead medic announced, looking at Evelyn, who sat quietly on the bench beside me.

Evelyn held my uninjured hand, her thumb gently tracing my knuckles with a tenderness she had never displayed in public.

"You're safe now, Claire," Evelyn whispered, her voice tight with suppressed fury.

"I received your courier package three hours ago in New York. I took the private charter the moment I read the psychiatric petition."

I closed my eyes, the memory of Grant’s attorney handing me those horrific papers earlier that afternoon hitting me like physical blows.

Grant had spent four months quietly laying the groundwork to have me declared legally incompetent.

He had bribed an unscrupulous private psychiatrist to sign false diagnoses of post-traumatic psychosis and postpartum mania before our child was even born.

His goal had been terrifyingly simple: strip me of my parental rights, seize my family’s trust inheritance, and raise our child with Sloane Avery in our Lake Forest estate.

We arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital under heavy private security escort.

Dr. Catherine Reynolds, the chief of obstetrics and a lifelong friend of the Mercer family, met the gurney in the trauma bay.

"Contractions are four minutes apart, Catherine," Evelyn stated firmly as the doors swung open into the high-security ward.

"And check the bones in her right metacarpal. She was stomped with a reinforced stiletto heel."

Dr. Reynolds gasped as she peeled back the dressing, exposing the purplish swelling and lacerations across my swollen fingers.

"Get an orthopedic x-ray team up here immediately!" Dr. Reynolds ordered, her face darkening with rage.

"And put two guards outside this floor. If Grant Mercer or anyone from his office sets foot past the elevators, have them arrested for domestic assault."

Thirty minutes later, the ultrasound technician applied warm gel to my abdomen, projecting our daughter’s image onto the high-definition monitor.

The baby was kicking, active, and perfectly formed beneath my ribs, completely unaware of the monstrous betrayal playing out outside the hospital walls.

"She’s strong, Claire," Dr. Reynolds smiled, handing me a warm towel to wipe the gel.

"Her vitals are exceptional. But the stress triggered pre-labor. We're keeping you on strict bed rest until she’s ready to arrive."

Arthur Vance walked into the private room, carrying three leather folders stamped with the official seal of the Cook County State's Attorney.

"Arthur," I whispered, propping myself up against the pillows. "Did you secure the footage?"

"The hotel manager tried to delete the exterior feeds on Grant's orders twenty minutes after we left," Arthur revealed, his jaw tightening into iron.

"Fortunately, Detective Miller arrived with a federal preservation warrant before the files could be overwritten."

"We have four high-definition angles of Sloane Avery stomping on your hand while Grant held the security guard back."
