Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

Liam Montgomery wasn't just an acquaintance of my grandfather; he was a renowned restructuring expert who had turned around struggling logistics giants across North America. More importantly, as he sat across from me in the boardroom, I saw in his eyes the exact same integrity, warmth, and quiet strength that Charles Bennett had possessed.

""Your grandfather talked about you constantly, Evelyn,"" Liam said softly, opening his portfolio to reveal handwritten letters from Charles. ""He loved you more than anything in this world. He stayed away from your married life because he knew Arthur Ashford was monitoring his movements. Charles didn't want the Ashfords to circle around you like vultures before you were ready to defend yourself. He spent his final five years building an unassailable financial fortress to protect you.""

Tears pricked my eyes, but for the first time in years, they were tears of profound gratitude. ""Grandfather thought of everything, didn't he?""

""Almost everything,"" Liam chuckled warmly. ""Except he underestimated how strong you would be when the moment arrived. Samuel told me what you did at the gala. Standing up to Nathaniel, refusing to kneel, stripping off that ring... Charles would have been extraordinarily proud of you.""

Working alongside Liam over the next six months felt effortless. Unlike Nathaniel, who treated every meeting as a chance to belittle others and assert his dominance, Liam was a true partner. He valued my instincts, respected my leadership, and worked tirelessly beside me eighteen hours a day to revitalize Bennett Global Enterprises. Under our joint leadership, the company expanded into ethical maritime logistics, securing massive federal contracts and restoring its reputation as a gold standard of corporate responsibility.

Meanwhile, the trial of Nathaniel and Margaret Ashford was swift and brutal. Stripped of their wealth, their assets, and their social standing, they were represented by an exhausted public defender. The evidence Samuel provided was so airtight that Nathaniel’s legal team had no choice but to negotiate a plea deal.

One afternoon, Samuel visited my office with the final court decrees.

""Nathaniel has been sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary for grand larceny, securities fraud, and money laundering,"" Samuel announced, placing the signed decree on my desk. ""Margaret received seven years for conspiracy and tax evasion. Their remaining personal assets, including Margaret’s jewelry and Nathaniel’s sports cars, were auctioned off this morning to pay court restitution fees.""

""And Vanessa?"" I asked.

""Vanessa Caldwell was arrested last week for credit card fraud and extortion connected to another wealthy victim she attempted to target after Nathaniel collapsed,"" Samuel said with a satisfied shake of his head. ""She won't be attending any high-society galas for a very long time.""

I looked at the divorce decree lying beside the court verdict. The judge had formally dissolved the marriage, restoring my maiden name, Evelyn Bennett, and declaring that Nathaniel Ashford was barred from contacting me, directly or indirectly, for the rest of his life.

I picked up the pen and signed the final line without a moment of hesitation. The last link to my painful past was severed forever.
