Chapter 6 - The Bitter Retaliation

By Sunday afternoon, the story had completely consumed the national media. Headlines blared across major business publications and social media feeds: “Billionaire Ashford Humiliated at Own Gala: Ex-Wife Revealed as True Empire Heiress!” and “The Ashford Scam: How Arthur and Nathaniel Stole Millions from Charles Bennett.” Video clips of Margaret Ashford scrambling on the champagne-soaked floor and Vanessa Caldwell admitting her fake pregnancy had garnered over fifty million views on TikTok within twenty-four hours.

Inside the Gold Coast mansion, I watched from the second-story library window as four private moving trucks sat idling in the driveway. The locks had already been re-keyed, and a team of professional security guards guarded the iron gates. Down on the sidewalk, Nathaniel stood in the biting wind, wearing the rumpled tuxedo from the night before, desperately trying to talk past the gate guards.

""Let me in!"" Nathaniel's muffled voice screamed through the intercom speaker on the wall. ""Evelyn! You can't do this! My mother is staying at a cheap motel on the outskirts of town! We have no cash! All my credit cards were declined at the gas station! Evelyn, pick up the phone!""

I pressed the intercom button calmly. ""Your personal clothing has been boxed and placed on the curb outside the gate, Nathaniel. Take it and leave.""

""Evelyn, please!"" he sobbed, his voice cracking with sheer desperation. ""I made a terrible mistake! I was blinded by greed! But we are still legally married! You cannot leave me on the street with nothing! Give me just five percent of the trust—just two million dollars! That's pocket change to you! If you don't, I will hire the best lawyers in the country and fight this will until the day you die!""

""You can try, Nathaniel,"" I replied smoothly. ""Except the law firm handling my estate is Whitmore & Sterling, and every attorney in Chicago knows you can't even afford a public defender right now. Goodbye.""

I released the button and turned away from the window. Down below, Nathaniel kicked the heavy iron gate in a fit of impotent rage, clutching his bruised foot as the security guards stepped forward, forcing him to grab his garbage bags of clothes and retreat down the boulevard like a stray dog.

Two hours later, Samuel arrived at the estate accompanied by Detective Marcus Reed from the Chicago Police Department’s financial crimes division.

""Good afternoon, Miss Bennett,"" Detective Reed said, shaking my hand warmly. ""Thanks to the forensic files Mr. Whitmore provided, a federal judge has just signed arrest warrants for Nathaniel Ashford and Margaret Ashford on eighteen counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. We caught Margaret an hour ago trying to board a flight to Zurich using a forged passport. Nathaniel was arrested forty minutes later in a rental car parked outside an underground pawn shop, trying to sell his grandfather's stolen gold watches.""

A profound sense of peace washed over my chest. The four years of emotional abuse, the quiet gaslighting, the constant insults from a bitter mother-in-law—it had all evaporated into the crisp Chicago air. Justice had not merely been served; it had been executed with surgical precision.

""What will happen to Ashford Global Holdings now, Samuel?"" I asked, looking out over the sprawling city skyline.

""The company requires a complete restructuring,"" Samuel answered. ""The Ashford name is toxic. But Charles Bennett left explicit instructions on that front as well. Under the founding charter, you have the right to rebrand the conglomerate under its original, rightful name: Bennett Global Enterprises. And Miss Bennett... the board of directors has just voted unanimously to offer you the position of Executive Chairwoman.""
