Chapter 10 - The Unwritten Future

"Vincent," I called out.
He stopped at the gate, turning around with a look of quiet curiosity.
"Yes, Claire?"
"Madison is staying with her mother this weekend," I said, standing up from the bench and walking slowly down the path toward him.
Vincent didn't move. He stood completely still, watching me approach.
"It’s a lot of work bathing three babies alone on Saturday night," I continued, stopping two steps in front of him. "I could use an extra pair of hands."
Vincent’s breath caught in his throat.
His eyes searched mine, looking for any trace of sarcasm or pity, finding only a calm, open horizon.
"Are you asking me to stay for dinner, Claire?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"I’m asking you to help bathe our children," I answered, a small, genuine smile curving my lips. "And if you don't burn the garlic bread, maybe we can eat dinner on the porch after they fall asleep."
A single tear escaped Vincent’s eye, tracing down his cheek before he could brush it away.
He didn't rush forward to hold me.
He didn't grab my hands or make extravagant promises about buying me new jewelry or building me new mansions.
Instead, he took a slow, deep breath, bowed his head in deep humility, and smiled through his tears.
"I won't burn the bread," he promised softly. "I took cooking classes this spring."
"Good," I replied, turning back toward the three sleeping cribs beneath the oak tree. "Because Liam is waking up, and he has your appetite."
Vincent walked beside me back toward the strollers, matching his pace to mine, keeping a respectful distance that acknowledged the long, careful road of rebuilding that still lay ahead of us.
We weren't the couple we had been five years ago.
The naive girl who begged for attention was gone, replaced by a fierce, independent mother who held all the cards to her own life.
And the arrogant billionaire who measured love in stock options had been stripped down to an honest man learning to love with his bare hands.
As the late afternoon sun cast long golden shadows across the lawn, Liam opened his dark blue eyes and let out a hungry wail.
Vincent immediately reached down, scooping our son into his arms with the steady, confident grace of a true father.
The past had burned to ashes.

The lies had shattered into dust.
And beneath the quiet trees of our new home, the real story of our family was finally ready to begin.
