Chapter 9 - The Price of Treason

Three months later.

Winter had settled over the East Coast, blanketing Manhattan in pristine white snow.

In a stark, fluorescent-lit federal courtroom in lower Manhattan, the final gavel struck with a sharp, definitive crack.

“Julian Rossi, having been found guilty of multiple counts of corporate extortion, securities fraud, and witness tampering, this court sentences you to seven years at Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution without possibility of early parole,” the judge declared with chilling neutrality. “Salvatore Rossi, having entered a plea agreement regarding international money laundering, is hereby remanded to federal custody for twelve years.”

Sitting in the fourth row of the gallery, dressed in an impeccably tailored camel wool coat, I watched as the bailiffs handcuffed Julian.

His face was gaunt, his designer suits replaced by standard dark civilian clothes. When he turned and saw me sitting beside Christian, his eyes flared with a desperate, pathetic mixture of rage and defeat. But as our eyes met, Julian saw no anger in my expression—only complete, absolute indifference.

He was no longer the arrogant prince of Manhattan. He was a convicted felon whose name had already been scrubbed from every building, pier, and boardroom in the state.

As the officers led him through the holding doors, Camila Thorne hurried out of the courtroom with a silk scarf wrapped tightly around her head to evade the photographers waiting in the lobby. Her family had disowned her after the financial contagion wiped out their investments, and she was now facing civil lawsuits for receiving illicit offshore transfers from Julian’s hidden accounts. She ran past us without daring to lift her gaze.

Christian took my hand, his thumb stroking the back of my fingers. “Are you ready to go home, Mrs. Moretti?”

“More than ready,” I smiled.

We walked out of the courthouse, bypassing the waiting press through a private side entrance where our car was waiting.

Over the past ninety days, our lives had transformed into a whirlwind of purpose and vindication. Christian had completely restructured Rossi Enterprises, liquidating their corrupt assets and transferring the remaining commercial holdings into a transparent, multi-billion-dollar maritime logistics conglomerate under the Moretti banner.

More importantly, the Vance-Moretti Medical Institute had officially opened its doors in Upper Manhattan. Fully funded with an endowment of three hundred million dollars, my research team had already begun human trials on the synthetic biomaterial graft I had spent eleven years developing—a medical breakthrough poised to save thousands of burn victims and reconstructive surgery patients worldwide.

My father had been appointed honorary chairman of the institute's community outreach board, ensuring that underprivileged families across the five boroughs received free access to cutting-edge medical care.

We were no longer surviving; we were building an empire that healed instead of harmed.
