Chapter 10 - Forever After Midnight

That evening, Christian and I stood on the private terrace of our penthouse, eighty stories above the glittering grid of Manhattan.

Snow fell gently around us, melting as soon as it touched the heated stone pavers. In the distance, the Hudson River moved like a ribbon of dark glass, reflecting the golden constellation of city lights.

It was almost midnight. Exactly three months to the minute since the nightmare had begun.

Christian walked up behind me, wrapping a heavy cashmere blanket around my shoulders and pulling me against his warm, broad chest. He rested his chin against the crown of my head, his arms encircling my waist.

“What are you thinking about?” he whispered into the cold night air.

“I’m thinking about how Julian stood eighty floors in the air that night and told me to find a man before sunrise,” I said softly, leaning back against him, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart. “He thought he was casting me out into the dark. He had no idea he was throwing me straight into the arms of the only man who could ever save me.”

Christian turned me gently in his arms until I was facing him. The soft amber lights of the terrace illuminated the sharp, handsome planes of his face, his dark eyes filled with an intensity that took my breath away every single day.

“You saved yourself, Elena,” Christian said softly, brushing a stray snowflake from my dark hair. “You had the courage to walk away when most people would have compromised their souls for comfort. I just provided the battlefield. You were the one who won the war.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a delicate, antique platinum key.

“What is this?” I asked, looking at the intricate engravings along its edge.

“This belongs to the estate in Lake Como,” Christian said, placing the key into my palm and folding my fingers over it. “The one my family lost when Salvatore Rossi manipulated our shipping lines thirty years ago. I bought it back yesterday morning. The deed is registered entirely in your name.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Christian... that estate is your family’s birthplace.”

“And now it’s our family’s sanctuary,” he replied, his voice thick with emotion. “We leave for Italy on Friday. Just the two of us. No press, no corporate boardrooms, no ghosts from the past. Just you, me, and the future we were always meant to have.”

Tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes. I reached up, cupping his face in my hands, feeling the rough shadow of his jawline.

“You know,” I whispered, a playful smile curling on my lips, “Julian gave me twelve hours of freedom that night.”

Christian’s lips curved into that rare, devastating smile that belonged only to me. “And what are you going to do with your freedom now, Mrs. Moretti?”

May you like

“I’m going to spend the next sixty years keeping you by my side,” I answered.

As the midnight bells chimed softly across the Manhattan skyline, Christian bent his head and kissed me beneath the falling snow. The city lights glittered below us like scattered toys, but high above the world, our foundation was unbreakable, forged in fire, and sealed in truth forever."
