Chapter 6 - The Stolen Embryos

Eleanor Gallagher did not startle easily, but the sight of her son—disheveled, wild-eyed, and openly defying her in broad daylight—caused a flicker of genuine shock to cross her face.
""Christopher,"" she said, her voice dropping into the stern, commanding register she had used on him since childhood. ""Control yourself. You look like a madman. I am handling this situation for you, exactly as I have handled every crisis in your life.""
""You didn't handle a crisis, Mother!"" Christopher shouted, closing the distance between them until he was standing toe-to-toe with the woman who had dominated his entire existence. ""You created one! You committed federal crimes! You bribed a licensed physician to falsify lab results and perform unauthorized destruction of medical property!""
""I protected your legacy!"" Eleanor snapped, her composure finally beginning to crack under the pressure of his fury. ""Look at her! Look at where she lives! She was never one of us! If you had children with her while you were married, she would have owned half of our corporate assets in the settlement! I did what your father would have done—I eliminated the threat!""
""They were my children!"" Christopher's voice cracked, a raw, primal scream that seemed to tear straight through his chest. ""You looked me in the eye while I sat in your living room drinking myself to death after the divorce, and you told me it was God's will! You watched me mourn the family I thought I could never have! You let me believe I was a failure as a husband and a man!""
""You were weak!"" Eleanor hissed, her mask slipping completely, revealing the ruthless corporate predator beneath. ""You were soft on her! And now, thanks to her greed, those children exist. Which means they belong in the Gallagher estate, under Gallagher guardianship, where they can be properly trained to inherit the empire. She is an unfit mother who stole our property!""
""They are not property!"" I shouted, stepping forward, unable to remain silent for another second. ""They are human beings! They have names! Maya loves painting and needs a nightlight to fall asleep. Clara is fiercely protective of her sisters and insists on tying her own shoes even when she gets the knots backward. Lily has a slight heart murmur that requires a pediatric specialist every six months—a specialist I paid for by working eighty hours a week while building a business from nothing!""
I looked Eleanor dead in the eye, my hands shaking with pure, unyielding rage. ""You don't know them. You don't love them. To you, they are just legal bargaining chips to keep Marcus away from your corporate board seats. You will never touch them.""
Eleanor sneered, turning her back on me to address her attorneys. ""Serve the papers. File the emergency ex-parte motion with Judge Callahan in Ohio. We will have federal marshals on this lawn by tomorrow morning.""
""Callahan won't touch the file, Mother,"" Christopher said, his voice suddenly turning deadly quiet.
Eleanor stopped. She slowly turned back around, her eyes narrowing. ""What did you say?""
Christopher reached into the interior pocket of his jacket and pulled out a digital recording device, along with a stack of signed affidavits bound in blue legal backing.
""Yesterday afternoon, Dr. Sterling signed a full confession in the presence of the Ohio State Medical Board and the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio,"" Christopher said, each word landing like a sledgehammer. ""He admitted to accepting two million dollars in laundered trust funds from your personal offshore account. He provided the bank routing numbers, the encrypted email exchanges between you and his private office, and the audio recording of the meeting where you explicitly instructed him to destroy my viable embryos without my knowledge or consent.""
The color rapidly drained from Eleanor's face. The South Sea pearls at her throat rose and fell with sudden, shallow gasps.
""You... you went to the feds?"" she whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. ""Against your own family? Against Gallagher Enterprises?""
""Gallagher Enterprises didn't commit the crime, Mother. You did,"" Christopher said, stepping directly between her and the front porch of my home. ""The US Attorney has already opened an investigation into wire fraud, conspiracy to violate medical ethics, and grand larceny. If you file a single motion against Evelyn, or if one of your private investigators so much as drives down this street again, the indictment will be unsealed before the markets open tomorrow morning.""
Eleanor stared at her son as if she were looking at a stranger. For forty years, she had molded him, controlled his friendships, dictated his career, and chosen his path. But in standing up for the children he had never known he had, Christopher had finally broken the invisible chains wrapped around his throat.

""You are destroying this family,"" Eleanor hissed through trembling lips.
""No,"" Christopher said softly, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with cold certainty. ""You destroyed it six years ago. Get off this property, Eleanor. Before I have you arrested for trespassing right now.""
