Chapter 4 - The Phantom Clinic Records

Within forty-eight hours of the airport encounter, my quiet life in Sarasota was shattered.

I had spent the last four years building a haven for my daughters. My children’s clothing line, Little Sprout Apparel, had grown from an Etsy shop run out of a garage into a thriving, multi-million-dollar eco-friendly brand. I had purchased a modest, sunlit home surrounded by live oaks and bougainvillea, where Maya, Clara, and Lily could run barefoot in the grass without ever knowing the toxic chill of the Gallagher family name.

Now, black luxury SUVs were parked at the end of my quiet cul-de-sac.

""Mommy, why is that strange car sitting outside?"" Clara asked on Tuesday morning, kneeling on the kitchen banquette as she buttered her toast.

""It's just some people looking at houses in the neighborhood, sweetie,"" I lied gently, smoothing down her curls before packing three little bento boxes with strawberries and cheese crackers for their preschool.

My phone rang. The screen displayed an unknown Cleveland area code. It had rung forty-seven times since Sunday afternoon. This time, I finally swiped the screen and brought the phone to my ear.

""I have the clinic records,"" Christopher's voice sounded ragged, stripped of sleep, utterly devoid of the polished veneer he had worn on the airplane.

I walked out onto the screened back patio, shutting the French doors so my daughters wouldn't hear. ""I told you to leave us alone, Christopher.""

""Evelyn, listen to me. Please,"" he pleaded, his voice breaking in a way I had never heard in the eight years we were together. ""I flew straight to Cleveland Sunday night. I forced Dr. Sterling out of his home at two in the morning. I brought my own corporate forensic accountants and the chief of legal counsel to the reproductive clinic at dawn.""

I stood silently, gripping the white railing of the porch, looking out over the calm waters of the canal behind my home. ""And what did you find?""

A long, ragged exhale shuddered through the speaker. ""The third cycle... the third cycle didn't fail. Sterling lied to us. The lab report we were given was a forgery.""

The words hung between us like heavy stones. Even though I had known it in my heart for five years, hearing Christopher confirm it out loud sent an icy chill racing down my spine.

""Sterling admitted that our third round yielded six viable, perfectly healthy blastocysts,"" Christopher choked out, the sound of a grown man weeping muffled behind his palm. ""Six of them, Evelyn. But my mother... Mother told him that I had expressed doubts about the marriage. She told him you were an opportunist trying to trap the Gallagher estate with a pregnancy. She paid Sterling two million dollars through an offshore medical research trust to tell us the cycle had collapsed and that your body was incapable of carrying.""

""And you believed them,"" I whispered, the old grief flaring hot behind my eyes. ""You looked at me like I was defective, Christopher. You stopped coming home. You let your mother tell everyone at the country club that your wife couldn't give you an heir.""

""I was a fool!"" he cried, his voice echoing in what sounded like an empty, cavernous room. ""I was a weak, blind coward who let my mother dictate every reality in my life! But Evelyn... how are the girls here? Sterling swore the embryos were destroyed. The paperwork said—""

""The paperwork was signed by a junior embryologist named Sarah Lin,"" I interrupted him, my voice trembling with the memory. ""Sarah was my college roommate's sister. Two weeks after you handed me the divorce papers, Sarah called me in the middle of the night, terrified. She told me that Eleanor had ordered the destruction of our remaining viable embryos, but Sarah couldn't bring herself to incinerate healthy life. She risked her entire career, her medical license, and federal prison to secretly transfer those three embryos to a cryogenic facility in Atlanta under my maiden name.""

The other end of the line was dead silent. I could hear Christopher's ragged breathing, fast and panicked.

""I had no money, Christopher,"" I continued, tears finally spilling down my cheeks. ""You gave me a fifty-thousand-dollar settlement and forced me to sign an NDA just to let me leave Ohio without being sued. I used every single penny of that settlement, took out two predatory personal loans, and paid an independent reproductive clinic in Georgia to transfer all three embryos. The doctor warned me that multiple births were high risk, that carrying triplets alone with no financial support would destroy me. But I looked at those microscopic cells and I knew they were all I had left in this world.""

""Evelyn..."" Christopher sobbed openly now, completely shattered. ""They're my daughters. Three of them. My blood. My babies.""

May you like

""They are my daughters, Christopher,"" I said with fierce, unyielding finality. ""You gave up your right to them the day you let your mother buy your loyalty. Do not come to Florida. Do not call this number again.""

""I can't do that, Evelyn,"" Christopher whispered, his voice suddenly shifting from grief to terrifying resolve. ""Because Mother knows. Sterling panicked and called her yesterday. And she's already filed an emergency petition for custody in the Cuyahoga County probate court.""
