Chapter 5 - The Matriarch's Frozen Smile

The war didn't wait for the court summons. It arrived on Thursday afternoon in the form of a black Maybach pulling directly into my driveway, followed by two private security sedans.
Julian had stayed at my house all week, anticipating trouble, but neither of us expected Eleanor Gallagher to show up on my front lawn in person.
The back door of the Maybach swung open, and the seventy-two-year-old matriarch of the Gallagher dynasty stepped out onto the crushed-shell driveway. She was draped in a tailored cream-colored cashmere coat despite the eighty-degree Florida heat, her silver hair sculpted into an immovable bob, a string of flawless South Sea pearls resting at her throat. Behind her stood two men in dark suits carrying thick leather briefcases.
Julian bolted off the porch couch, but I caught his arm. ""Take Maya, Clara, and Lily upstairs to the playroom. Lock the door. Do not let them come down, no matter what you hear.""
""Evelyn, you can't talk to that serpent alone,"" Julian hissed, his fists clenched.
""She doesn't scare me anymore, Julian. Take the girls.""
I waited until I heard the upstairs door click shut before I stepped off the porch and walked halfway down the stone pathway. Eleanor approached with the slow, measured grace of a monarch inspecting a peasant village. Her sharp blue eyes swept over my home, the colorful plastic tricycle on the lawn, the chalk drawings of flowers on the sidewalk, her lip curling in subtle, aristocratic disgust.
""Well, Evelyn,"" Eleanor began, her voice as smooth and cold as polished marble. ""I must say, I never expected you to pull off something so remarkably underhanded. Stealing Gallagher biological material and hiding our heirs in a swamp. Quite ambitious for a girl whose father fixed transmissions in Toledo.""
""Get off my property, Eleanor,"" I said, keeping my hands resting calmly in my pockets, though every nerve ending in my body was screaming.
Eleanor smiled—a chilling, mechanical stretch of her lips that never reached her cold eyes. ""I wouldn't be so hasty, dear. We both know why I'm here. Those three little girls carry the Gallagher name, whether you like it or not. More importantly, they are Christopher's only biological heirs. Under the Gallagher Family Trust established by my late husband, Christopher must produce an heir before his fortieth birthday, or the voting control of Gallagher Enterprises shifts entirely to my nephew Marcus.""
The pieces of the puzzle suddenly locked together with horrifying clarity.
""That's what this was always about,"" I whispered, disgust rising in my throat. ""The trust. Christopher turns forty next month. You didn't care about a grandchild; you cared about maintaining control of the board.""
""Control of an eight-billion-dollar empire, Evelyn,"" Eleanor corrected sharply, stepping closer, her perfume choking the sweet air. ""Something you could never comprehend. When I realized Christopher was infatuated with you, I tolerated the marriage. But when it became clear that you were fragile, that you were influencing him to move away from the family business, you became an unacceptable liability. So, I removed you.""
""By bribing a doctor to falsify medical records? By telling your son his wife was barren?""
Eleanor didn't even flinch. She adjusted the diamond ring on her finger with absolute indifference. ""Dr. Sterling did what was best for the family. And now, you are going to do what is best for the family.""
One of her attorneys stepped forward, unzipping a leather folder and pulling out a thick stack of legal documents.
""This is an unconditional surrender of parental rights,"" Eleanor said, gesturing toward the papers. ""You will sign custody of all three girls over to Christopher and myself. In exchange, the Gallagher Trust will wire twenty-five million dollars into a blind offshore account in your name. You will leave the country within forty-eight hours and agree never to contact the children again.""
I stared at the papers, then looked back up into the cold, dead eyes of the woman who had tried to erase my existence.
""And if I refuse?""
Eleanor's smile vanished, replaced by an expression of venomous authority. ""If you refuse, my legal team will file an emergency motion for temporary custody based on medical fraud, interstate kidnapping of genetic material, and psychological instability. We will drag you through every court in the country. We will audit your little clothing company, destroy your suppliers, and bankrupt you until you cannot afford a public defender. You will lose those girls, Evelyn. And you won't get a single dime.""
A car engine roared down the street, tires screeching as a black sports sedan turned violently into the driveway, skidding to a stop right behind Eleanor's Maybach.

The driver's door flew open, and Christopher stepped out. He hadn't shaved in days. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his tie gone, his eyes bloodshot and blazing with an unholy fury.
""She won't be signing anything, Mother,"" Christopher roared, striding across the lawn like a man possessed. ""And if you don't get off her property right now, I'm calling the FBI.""
