Chapter 9 - Under the Winter Moon

The aftermath at the railyard was swift and decisive. Julian and the loyal Moretti capos tied up Marco and Nathan Vance, turning Marco over to the syndicate elders for permanent exile and stripping of all assets.

Nathan, sobbing and begging for mercy, was dumped outside the Chicago Police Headquarters alongside the encrypted flash drives detailing his collaboration with organized crime syndicates. He was looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary without parole.

When we returned to the penthouse, Dr. Chen was already waiting. After a thorough ultrasound and monitoring, she declared that the baby was completely unharmed, though she ordered me to remain on strict bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy.

That night, after the adrenaline finally subsided, I lay in the massive king-sized bed. The blizzard had ceased, leaving behind a clear, star-studded sky reflecting off Lake Michigan.

The bedroom door opened quietly. Adrian stepped in, carrying a tray of hot chamomile tea and fresh pastries. He had showered, dressed in simple grey sweatpants and a dark t-shirt, looking stripped of his armor and completely vulnerable.

He set the tray on the nightstand and sat beside me on the mattress.

""I called my attorneys this evening,"" Adrian said quietly, staring down at his hands.

A cold pang of dread struck my chest. ""The divorce papers? The one-year contract?""

Adrian looked up, his dark eyes brimming with raw, unvarnished emotion. ""I told them to burn the contract.""

I held my breath.

""Claire, when I thought Marco had killed you today... when I thought I was too late..."" His voice fractured, a man who had never shown weakness breaking before me. ""I realized that the Moretti empire, the money, the power, none of it means anything without you. I lied to you in that grocery store.""

""You lied?"" I whispered.

""I didn't step in just to repay a debt to Julian,"" Adrian confessed, his rough hand gently cradling the side of my face. ""I have loved you from the moment you stitched my brother's wounds two years ago. I watched you endure Nathan's cruelty because you were too proud to let anyone save you. In that market, when I saw you holding that basket, ready to starve for your baby, I swore to God I would tear the world apart just to see you smile.""

Tears spilled over my cheeks, hot and sweet.

Adrian slid off the bed and dropped to both knees on the carpet. The king of Chicago, bowing his head before me.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a simple, elegant platinum band.

""Don't marry me for a year, Claire,"" he begged softly, his thumb caressing my fingers. ""Marry me for life. Let me be a father to your daughter. Let me love you the way you deserve to be loved. No lies. No contracts. Just us.""

I reached down, pulling him up by his collar until his lips were inches from mine.

May you like

""I love you, Adrian Moretti,"" I whispered, smiling through my tears. ""And yes. A thousand times, yes.""

When he kissed me this time, there were no audiences, no cameras, and no threats. There was only devotion, fierce and unyielding, sealing our souls together under the winter moon.
