Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Shadows

The fallout from the gala was catastrophic for the Vance family. Within forty-eight hours, Nathan was formally indicted for corporate embezzlement and fraud, and his father was forced to resign from the board of directors. Victoria broke off their engagement immediately, unwilling to stand by a disgraced felon facing ten years in prison.
Yet, inside the quiet sanctuary of the Moretti penthouse, a different kind of tension was blooming.
It was nearly two in the morning, and my swollen feet were aching terribly. Unable to sleep, I crept out toward the expansive kitchen to pour myself a glass of warm milk. As I turned on the low under-cabinet lighting, I found Adrian sitting on the balcony, the glass door cracked open.
He was wearing only a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, unbuttoned at the collar. A tumbler of amber scotch rested beside him. He looked tired, the hard, unyielding lines of his face softened by shadows.
""You should be resting,"" he said without looking back, having heard my soft footsteps.
""The baby is kicking like crazy tonight,"" I murmured, leaning against the doorframe. ""I think she’s practicing soccer.""
A rare, faint smile touched Adrian's lips. He turned his head, watching me with an intensity that made my stomach flutter with something entirely unrelated to pregnancy.
""Come here,"" he said softly.
I walked onto the balcony, the cool autumn breeze biting against my arms. Adrian noticed my slight shiver, immediately stood up, and slipped his heavy wool coat around my shoulders. It was warm from his body and smelled deliciously of him.
""Sit,"" he commanded gently, guiding me into the cushioned patio chair. Before I could protest, he knelt down on one knee on the cold stone floor, taking my bare, swollen feet into his large, calloused hands.
""Adrian, you don't have to do that—""
""Quiet, Claire,"" he murmured, his thumbs applying steady, expert pressure to the arches of my feet.
A soft sigh escaped my lips as the throbbing tension melted away. His hands were rough from a lifetime of violence, but his touch against my skin was reverent, infinitely gentle.
""Where did you learn how to do that?"" I whispered, my heart thumping rapidly.
""Julian broke both ankles during a hit five years ago,"" Adrian said quietly. ""Physical therapy was slow. I learned how to help him walk again.""
I looked down at the feared mafia king kneeling before me, tending to a woman who had come into his life by accident. ""You act like a monster, Adrian, but you're not. You care deeply about the people you protect.""
Adrian paused, his dark eyes rising to meet mine. ""Only the people who matter, Claire. And right now, there is nothing in this world that matters more to me than you and the girl you're carrying.""
My breath hitched. The air between us grew thick with unspoken desire. He rose slowly to his feet, standing over me, his hand reaching out to tenderly cup my rounded belly. At that exact moment, the baby gave a firm, distinct kick against his palm.
Adrian's eyes widened in genuine wonder. The ruthless crime lord looked completely stunned, his lips parting slightly as he felt the tiny flutter of life beneath his fingers.
""She... she kicked,"" he whispered, a rare look of boyish awe breaking across his face.
""She likes you,"" I said softly, tears prickling behind my eyes.

Before Adrian could answer, his encrypted phone vibrated against the table. The sudden buzz shattered the intimacy of the moment. Adrian glanced at the screen, and the tenderness vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of cold fury.
""Uncle Marco has called an emergency council meeting of the Five Families,"" Adrian said, his voice flat and dangerous. ""He’s questioning our engagement. He knows this marriage prevents him from seizing control.""
