Chapter 7 - Fractured Lines

Two months passed in a whirlwind of preparation and growing intimacy. My eighth month of pregnancy arrived with a flurry of winter snow that blanketed Chicago in brilliant white.

The penthouse was no longer a cold luxury suite; it felt like a home. Every evening, Adrian returned early from his meetings, shedding his guns and heavy coats to sit with me in the nursery. He read baby books, assembled high chairs with quiet precision, and rubbed soothing lavender lotions into my tired back.

The boundaries of our ""contract"" were dissolving rapidly. When he held me, it was no longer for the cameras. When he looked at me, there was a raw, burning passion that made my heart race. I had fallen deeply, completely in love with the mafia boss who had sworn to protect me.

One snowy evening, while Adrian was meeting with Don Salvatore downtown, the penthouse phone rang. It was an unlisted line reserved strictly for emergencies.

I answered with trembling hands. ""Hello?""

""Claire... help me...""

It was Julian’s voice, ragged, wet, and choked with blood.

""Julian! What happened? Where are you?"" I cried out, my heart dropping into my stomach.

""Marco... ambushed our transport near the old South Side railyard... Adrian went in to get me out, but it’s a trap... Marco has snipers... they have Adrian pinned down... Claire, he’s bleeding out... just like I was...""

The call went dead with a burst of static.

Panic surged through my veins like poison. My mind screamed that it could be dangerous, but the thought of Adrian lying in a pool of blood, dying alone in the snow, tore every shred of caution from my soul. I grabbed my winter parka, slipped into snow boots, and took Adrian’s spare set of car keys from the counter.

I bypassed the private elevator guards by taking the service stairwell down to the underground parking garage. Driving through the blinding blizzard, my hands gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles cracked.

Hold on, Adrian, I prayed desperately, tears streaming down my face. Please, god, just hold on.

I pulled the SUV into the abandoned industrial rail depot thirty minutes later. The wind howled through the rusted steel beams of the warehouse. The ground was slick with black ice and slush.

I pushed open the heavy warehouse doors, calling out into the dark cavern. ""Adrian? Julian!""

A slow, mocking clap echoed from the catwalks above.

Floodlights snapped on, blinding me with brutal intensity. When my eyes adjusted, my stomach plummeted into icy horror.

Julian was not injured. He wasn't even there.

Standing on the loading dock surrounded by eight heavily armed mercenaries was Marco Moretti, holding a high-caliber pistol. And beside him, tied to a wooden pillar with ropes binding his bruised torso, was Nathan Vance.

""Welcome to the family reunion, Claire,"" Marco sneered, descending the steel stairs. ""You really are a naive little fool.""
