Chapter 7 - The Desperate Defense

Vanessa didn't go quietly. As Detective Miller moved to secure her wrists, she lunged sideways toward her tote bag, attempting to grab the folder containing the forged promissory notes. But the second officer moved swiftly, intercepting her arms and twisting her hands behind her back. The sharp click of the steel cuffs echoed off the glass walls like a gunshot.

""Get your filthy hands off me!"" Vanessa screamed, her hair falling wild and disheveled around her flushed face. ""Hannah, tell them to stop! Tell them this is a misunderstanding! I'm your sister! You can't do this to me!""

""You're not my sister,"" I said, standing tall beside my mother. ""You never were. You were just a parasite who mistook our kindness for weakness.""

The officers marched Vanessa out through the main lobby of Fifth Third Bank. The tellers watched in stunned silence as the impeccably dressed woman who had strutted in thirty minutes earlier was dragged out in handcuffs, screaming obscenities and threatening to ruin everyone in the building. Ethan was waiting at the double glass entrance doors, holding open the exit while looking at her with cold, unflinching indifference. As she passed him, she spat at his shoes, but Ethan didn't even flinch. He simply turned his back on her and walked straight toward me, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

Over the next seventy-two hours, the full extent of Vanessa’s psychological descent became public record. During the execution of a search warrant at her luxury rental apartment in Upper Arlington, investigators uncovered a sickening trove of evidence.

In her second bedroom, which she kept padlocked from the inside, police discovered a fully furnished nursery. The walls were painted the exact same sage-green color as Josie's room. Sitting in the corner was an identical retired sea-captain rocking chair that Ethan had picked out for our house. And pinned to a corkboard above the crib were dozens of stolen photographs of Ethan, stolen ultrasound pictures of Josie, and printed copies of my own medical charts that Vanessa had illegally downloaded through her unauthorized access to the St. Bridget’s portal.

Even Detective Miller, a seasoned thirty-year veteran of law enforcement, was visibly shaken when he briefed Ethan and me at the precinct on Friday morning.

""This wasn't just a financial scam, Mrs. Vance,"" Detective Miller explained, sliding crime scene photographs across his metal desk. ""This was a comprehensive life-assumption plot. She had already submitted applications to private adoption agencies using forged parental consent waivers, attempting to establish legal guardianship of your daughter in the event of your medical incapacitation.""

""Incapacitation?"" Ethan repeated, the blood draining from his face. ""What does that mean?""

Detective Miller looked gravely at us both. ""Among the items recovered from her bathroom medicine cabinet was a commercial vial of concentrated potassium chloride and several sterile insulin syringes. She works as an account manager for a pharmaceutical distribution company. She had unauthorized access to restricted medical supplies.""

I collapsed back into my chair, trembling violently as Ethan grabbed my hand. The sudden spike in my blood pressure that had triggered my emergency C-section twelve hours early hadn't been an accident of biology. Four days before my delivery, Vanessa had visited our home and brought me a bottle of homemade organic raspberry leaf tea, claiming it would help prepare my body for labor. I had drank two glasses before feeling violent heart palpitations and dizziness that landed me in the emergency room.
