Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Bank

By eight o'clock the following morning, we had assembled an airtight dossier of digital evidence. But Julian warned us that filing a police report immediately might cause Vanessa to liquidate her assets and flee the jurisdiction before the county prosecutor could issue formal indictments.
""If she realizes the net is closing,"" Julian explained over breakfast, ""she’ll transfer that ninety thousand dollars from the Evergreen LLC account into an offshore cryptocurrency exchange or cash cashier's checks. If that money disappears, Denise loses her house, regardless of whether Vanessa goes to prison. We need to catch her in the act of trying to enforce the fraud.""
Ethan had already formulated a plan. ""Vanessa believes Hannah is terrified, helpless, and bedridden from her surgery. She expects Hannah to call her, beg for mercy, and try to negotiate.""
I looked at my reflection in the dark kitchen window. The woman staring back at me wasn't the timid office manager who spent her life keeping everybody comfortable. My eyes were sharp, determined, and utterly cold.
""I know exactly how to play her,"" I said.
At nine-fifteen, I picked up my phone, took a deep breath, and dialed Vanessa’s number. She answered on the very first ring, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.
""Hannah? How are you feeling, sweetie? Has the pain subsided?""
""I found the loan documents, Vanessa,"" I said, pitching my voice to sound shaky, weak, and on the verge of breaking into tears. ""Mom showed me everything. How could you do this to us?""
Vanessa let out a long, theatrical sigh on the other end of the line. ""Oh, Hannah. I was hoping Denise wouldn't burden you with that so soon. But you have to understand, I did it to protect your family. Your mother was completely drowning in debt. She begged me to help her find an investor, and when the bank refused her application, I had to step in and use my own corporate connections to save the house.""
""You put my name on a hundred-and-twenty-thousand-dollar debt!"" I sobbed convincingly into the microphone. ""And now Ethan knows! He’s threatening to pack his bags and leave me! He says he won't stay with a woman who ruins her own family financially!""
There was a brief pause, and I could practically hear the vile satisfaction radiating through the receiver. Vanessa was drinking in my manufactured misery like fine wine.
""I told you Ethan wasn't dependable, Han,"" she purred softly. ""A real man doesn't abandon his wife when things get tough. Listen to me... we can fix this. You don't have to lose your mother's house, and you don't have to face this alone.""
""How?"" I sniffled. ""What do you want?""
""The Evergreen Trust has the legal authority to assume full responsibility for the debt,"" Vanessa offered, her tone becoming businesslike. ""Meet me at the Fifth Third Bank branch on Bridge Street this afternoon at two o'clock. If you and your mother sign the voluntary quitclaim deed transferring the house title to my trust, I will personally pay off the balance of the loan and release you from all financial liability. You can even stay in the house as tenants for a nominal rent.""
She was trying to steal the deed outright, using my fabricated panic to rush me into signing away my family’s generational home.
""All right,"" I whispered, sounding thoroughly defeated. ""I’ll bring Mom. We’ll meet you in the private conference room at two.""
""Good girl,"" Vanessa said soothingly. ""You're making the right decision for Josie. I’ll see you soon, Mama.""

The second the call disconnected, I looked up at Ethan and Julian, who were monitoring the call recording on the laptop.
""She took the bait,"" Ethan said grimly. ""Now let's call Detective Miller.""
