Chapter 2 - The Facade Cracks Wide Open

Ethan stopped dead in his tracks the second he saw Vanessa standing beside my bed. The cardboard cup tray in his hand crinkled under the sudden, violent grip of his fingers. His jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscles twitching beneath his skin.
""What the hell are you doing here?"" Ethan’s voice cut through the sterile room like a razor blade. ""I told the front desk that only immediate family was permitted on this floor.""
Vanessa transformed in an instant. The smug, untouchable mistress vanished, replaced by the trembling, fragile victim she had perfected over a lifetime of manipulation. Her eyes welled with instant tears, her lower lip quivering as she pressed a hand against her chest.
""Ethan, please,"" she whispered dramatically, glancing between him and me. ""I couldn't stay quiet anymore. I told Hannah the truth. We can't keep sneaking around behind her back. It isn't fair to her, and it isn't fair to our daughter.""
Ethan froze. He looked at Vanessa as if she had just grown two heads, absolute disgust washing over his features. ""What did you just say?""
""Don't do this,"" Vanessa pleaded, stepping toward him, her hands clasped. ""Don't pretend it didn't happen just because she's sitting right there! Tell her about the weekends. Tell her about the promises you made me in my apartment! We love each other, Ethan!""
Ethan didn't shout. He didn't stutter. He walked calmly to the bedside table, set down the coffees, and reached into his coat pocket. He pulled out his phone, unlocked the screen, and placed it flat on my hospital blanket so both Vanessa and I could see it clearly.
""Three months ago, in October,"" Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm, ""I was in Chicago for four consecutive weeks running the regional audit for my firm. Hannah flew out to spend two weekends with me, and the other two I worked eighty-hour weeks surrounded by twenty colleagues in a glass conference room. My hotel receipts, my flight logs, and my badge swipes are all documented.""
He turned his piercing gaze directly onto Vanessa, stepping forward until she was forced to take a step back against the wall.
""Furthermore, Vanessa, every single call you’ve attempted to make to my phone since July has gone straight to my blocked voicemail folder, where your drunken rambling messages are automatically saved as evidence. You’ve sent me forty-two unhinged emails from six different burner accounts threatening to ruin my life if I didn't leave my wife. I handed those transcripts to our attorney, Marcus Vance, three weeks ago.""
Vanessa’s breath hitched. Her carefully constructed fantasy began to crumble beneath the weight of cold, indisputable facts.
""You're lying,"" she stammered, looking frantically between us. ""You're just trying to cover your tracks because Hannah will take half your money in the divorce!""
""There is no divorce,"" I spoke up from the bed, holding Josie closer to my chest. ""Because unlike you, Vanessa, my husband doesn't lie to me. When you showed up at his office last summer, he told me immediately. When you tried to corner him in the grocery store parking lot in November, he called me before he even backed out of the space. You thought you were driving a wedge between us, but you were actually handing us every piece of rope we needed to hang your delusions.""
Vanessa’s face twisted into an ugly, sneering mask. The gentle, supportive best friend was completely gone.
""You think you’re so smart, Hannah,"" she hissed, pointing a trembling finger at me. ""You think you have everything figured out with your perfect suburban life, your boring husband, and your stupid baby. You don't know anything. You don't even know what's happening under your own mother's roof.""
Before Ethan could grab her arm, the door opened again, and a nurse entered accompanied by two uniformed hospital security guards. Ethan had clearly alerted the desk the moment he saw her slip down the hallway.
""Ma'am, you need to step away from the patient and leave the premises immediately,"" the lead guard instructed, his hand resting near his duty belt. ""You are not on the approved visitor registry.""
Vanessa smoothed down her designer sweater with frantic, jerky motions. She looked at Ethan, then glared down at me with venomous hatred. ""Enjoy your little victory, Hannah. Because when you finally get out of this hospital bed, you won't have a family left to go home to.""
She was escorted out into the hallway, her high heels clicking sharply against the linoleum until the sound faded completely. Ethan immediately closed the door, locked the interior latch, and sank down onto the edge of my bed, burying his face in his hands.
""I'm sorry,"" he breathed, his voice breaking. ""I should have had a restraining order filed months ago. I tried to protect your stress levels while you were pregnant, but I should have ended this sooner.""
May you like
""Ethan,"" I said softly, touching his shoulder. ""What did she mean about my mother?""
Ethan looked up, his eyes heavy with worry. ""We need to talk about Denise. And we need to look at her bank accounts right now.""
