Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Diner

The cassette clicked to a silent halt. I sat on the floor of the study for a long time, listening only to the hum of the refrigerator in the distant kitchen. Daniel was not my brother. He was the man who had adored me, protected me, and carried the crushing weight of an international secret on his shoulders every single day of our marriage.

And Emily... Emily was not a traitor or a mistress. She was an unsung bodyguard who had traded her youth, her romantic prospects, and her own peace of mind to keep me breathing.

I grabbed my car keys, the brass key, and the file folder, sprinting out of the front door. The harbor diner was forty minutes away, nestled along the rocky coastline where fishing boats bobbed in the rising tide.

When I pushed through the diner’s jingling glass doors, I spotted Emily sitting in a booth tucked in the farthest back corner. She had dark purple rings beneath her eyes. Her fingers shredded a paper napkin into tiny white snowflakes. A lukewarm cup of untouched tea sat before her.

As my shadow fell over the booth table, she flinched and looked up. The terror in her eyes was palpable. She opened her mouth to apologize, her chin quivering, bracing herself for the slap, the screams, the righteous fury of a ruined friendship.

"Sarah... please," she whispered, tears spilling freely onto the laminate tabletop. "I know you must loathe me. I lied to your face for thirty-seven years. I monitored your dates, I vetted your boyfriends, I orchestrated meetings... I acted like God in your life because my father made me promise to protect you with my soul. If you want to walk away and never look at me again, I will accept it. I just couldn't let you read about it in the morning newspaper."

I slid into the vinyl booth across from her without saying a single word.
